They are in a somewhat worse town(I think I'm being nice when I say that), but they are closer to cities like Omaha, Des Moines, St. Louis, Kansas City, which I do think helps their recruiting 6 hours is better than 8 for driving. This might even pave the way for multi-year contracts. Their budget is somewhat the same. Their assistants are low paid. I'm sure Sell will be watching with interest how this pans out for USD. I'm not saying anyone is firing Stig, but down the road, it will be a good indicator how quick the admin in Brookings will push the button.
So sorry if this is smackish, but they are first is something for once since goind D-1. needing to hire a new football coach. And I dont mean it in a bad way, I agree with the CR. SDSU can watch to see what they do right and wrong in the process for future coaching changes that might occur. If anything about how does a low budget school with 1 year contracts get a good coach and assistants.

I would be shocked if Wes is actually considered for the job, regardless of his coaching abilities.

The rule of thumb on hiring a new head coach:

If you like the direction the program is heading, you hire from within; If you don't, you hire outside of the program.

And when I heard A.D. Saylor interviewed about not renewing Ed's contract, he sounded like a GPS say "RECALCULATING, RECALCULATING..."

Wes will do a great job with whatever chance he gets. I will always, always be in his corner. Nicest guy you could meet and a great coach.

I don't agree that this is a good move for SDSU, in the sense that it will make USD worse. It might in the immediate short term but I think USD will be better off long term. I think Ed did a good job recruiting because he would be lenient with more athletic players that might have academic issues, but he wasn't that great of a coach. I think if Sayler brings in a better football coach, USD will improve. Which I think will be good for SDSU, but I doubt that opinion is in the majority here.

Despite what I said below, I agree with you. I just hope he gets a shot somewhere.

It will be interesting to see whether Sayler can bring in a better coach. I see in the USD media guide Ed M. has the highest winning percentage of any coach at the school since WWII.

If he gets full credit for Sumner....does he also get full credit for TOB?

You mean for TOB giving up and then quitting? The young man had talent but lost heart. Is that the coach's fault. Be careful about wishing for a new coach, you may end up with a guy like Ed.

There is more behind the story. I don't think the TOB drama is a good example for anything. It wasn't a straight "I quit" as everyone is led to believe. I don't think anyone is wishing for a new coach. It's nice that USD is acting as a barometer for us, for once, and will give us a great indicator of what to expect should Stig retire someday. I think we can all agree no one wants Meadows as the Head Coach. Is anyone offering him a D2 position this year by the way? Please?!?

I don't agree on the 'USD as barometer' concept. I think there's very little to learn from one school's experience under these circumstances. We may both be in the produce aisle at the grocery store but in Vermillion they're talking about apples and the Jacks aren't talking but if they do, it'll be about oranges.

I agree with the comments reguarding TOB. Thats all I will say on this board. Coach Stig is about 54 or 55 in age and I think retirement is something that might be on his mind. I have never asked him, but I am sure if pressure was put on him to resign he would step aside if they let him continue teaching for a few more years. So some of you may get your wish. Those of you who question his judgement need to spend 500 bucks and join the Difference Makers Club. You find out first hand what he knows about the game of football. He knows a great deal, this is his life.
I agree also with JackJD who feels we will land a playoff spot next year and USD though comparable in terms of budgets, is a completely different situation and for them to pick Caruso, or Besschomer, DeBoer or Vigen will not be much of change in direction that AD Sayler is speaking of.

Is that some sort of sly comment saying we are gonna make the orange bowl some day?

I would be surprised if they limit to the few connected to usd. I would imagine they will look for someone who has experince as head coach or proven cordinator at this level or higher.

Agreed. What we will learn is that a coaching change is very disruptive to a program and sets things back a few years. It's going to be a tough go for USD for a couple of years.

                              This...

his overall D1 record isn't very good. When you consider that against the MVFC he is 0-4 with only one tight game (at home against UNI) you have to think that, along with the off field issues being hinted at pushed Sayler to make the change now instead of later.

I think many are focused on the wrong side of the field for the reason he is gone. I think the words that USD’s AD used that are important are "Academics" and "Desipline" or lack there of, these may hold the keys for those trying to figure out why he is gone.
