I just ran across this site which lists the funniest high school football team nicknames in each state. There might be a couple of people who enjoy it.

SD funniest is the Sturgis Scoopers. I have never questioned that one, but I assume its referencing some one with a scoop.

It always reminded me of cleaning the barn with a big scoop shovel. Something most young fellows don't have to do anymore.

I believe it's because of the mines in that area. Gold Diggers and Miners are already taken I believe.

will someone tell me where Carolina came up with the Tar Heels? And will you tell me what a Tar Heel is? My friend Emily and I just decided it was a heel with tar on it

I think they just love their rock n roll.

No, that is not it. Most people think that is it, but Sturgis was a "scooptown" to fort Meade. Calvary members claimed they were "scooped" every payday from the Merchants in Sturgis.

This is how it was explained to me in South Dakota History and what it says on Sturgis' website.

Actually that is pretty much it. It has to do with the Civil War and Tar was being produced in North Carolina. Two versions I've heard. 1 was they were really good and stayed and people say they must have tar on their heels to stay in battle so well. The other one was they said the Viriginians needed to put Tar on their heels because they fled right away.

When Claremont still had a school they were the Honkers. Excellant nickname.

Claremont is located close to Britton and is near to many lakes or/and sloughs that are famous for honking ducks. Thus the name.

Btw what does the Tea area use for a nickname? Tea Bags?

I have always assumed that the cavalry members had their basic needs taken care of by the army; things like food, clothing, and their horses. So who were those merchants that the Scoopers were named after. Perhaps they were the ones in the various entertainment businesses. I tend to think that the Scoopers were named after those who ran the gambling houses, the drinking establishments, and the houses of ill repute.

So scoopers = small business owners\entrepneurs? Interesting.
