I guess I don't even think about being killed from a terrorist attack. The chances are extremely slim. I suspect my chances of dying in a car accident are exponentially higher than from a terrorist.

I choose not to let them affect my life.

Well, after having personally been in a few of those parts of the world, I can report that yes, many Americans' perceptions of the world are quite skewed--most places in the world are not nearly so comfortable and safe as Brookings.

And many people living in those places have a far, far more limited and skewed view of how America and the rest of the world works than even Americans do--if indeed they even worry about it at all, which most people in this world don't because they're too busy just trying to stay alive to see another day--and I mean that quite literally, in the sense of finding enough food to eat and enough money (or a sheet of tin, or a burlap bag) to provide a relatively safe and dry place to sleep at night.

I suspect you and I would actually find a great deal of agreement on what needs to be done to alleviate the generally appalling level of misery which still exists for the majority of people living on this world. Where our differences, you and I, likely arise are not so much the goals but the methods.

Well said. My world travels are quite limited and were paid for by the US Navy, namely Guam and Japan. But my 2 years in Japan were eye openers. Nearly every weekend when leaving the base we were handed a piece of paper admonishing us to stay away from this place or that place because of a demonstration. Japan supposely was our strong allie in the 1960's and still are, but my point is that there all kind of groups who do not preceive us as the good guys. I can imagine what you saw in your world travels and that would make me shiver.

How do we fix these problems? I try to read Foreign Affairs and most of the real experts who author the articles do not have any easy answers, so neither do I.

And to NorCalJack, I do not wake up each morning thinking I am going to meet Bin Laden ghost or any of his followers, but everything has a remote possiblity. And yes it's so easy to be wiped out on the highway. All you have to do is start dialing your radio knob and the next thing you know are swarving to miss a head on collison.

I have avoided giving credit where credit is due and that is the Navy Seals. That program was just getting started when I was on active duty. I recall an acquaintence went to one of their training schools. No fun believe me. These guys were indeed brave and should feel good about their accompolishment.

I do not know how the Navajo tribe feels about the code word Geramino, but I suspect a few of the Native vets feel honored.

I heard there's a new drink called the "Bin Laden".... two shots and a splash of water...

(that might get me a "wag of the fingers" from the Mods, but you gotta admit it was pretty funny)

Does this mean the US government gets santioned by the NCAA for using Native names.

This has to be an attempt at humor. I will not bite. Except USNAVY Academy might have to bear the brunt of for this unauthorize use of Native name. US Navy Academy is a member of the NCAA so we can weasel the rules in their direction. That's the only dog the NCAA has in this fight.

Tried to give you some love (rep points) but said I have to spread it around first. Apparently I have given you way to much love in the past.

Does the NCAA really want to tick off the organization which employs SEAL Team 6? (This is an attempt at humor . . .)

Personally I like to refer to a BM now as burying a Bin Laden. similar to taking the kids to the pool, filing some paperwork, browns to the superbowl etc....
