Apparently most of the students would be in the Brookings City Count, according to the US Census website. This website answers all the unusual circumstances of how people were counted. Click on students and you get the rules that were followed.

If you live nine out of 12 months somewhere why wouldn't you counted there?

Full-time students are supposed to be counted in the town in which they're going to college. This doesn't always happen, of course.

I think you're right. I think a significant number of college students are counted in their hometowns, too.

How about this conflict: most college students vote in their hometowns. The census is important for many reasons, one of those being the detemination of legislative districts and representation in government. Nice benefit for the college towns and their districts!

Just think if all SDSU students were to register they would likely be a large enough group to have their own district in the state house...

That's one way to look at it. Another: if the students vote at home but are counted in the census as resident of Brookings, the voters in a district including Brookings will have a little different ratio of voters:reps...one voter has a tiny bit more representation than voters in some other districts.

For Watertown only having 166 more people than Brookings, you can compare the cities by their High School enrollments. Watertown has 963.280 students and Brookings has 582.940. I know this only covers a few grades but Watertown has a much bigger school.

Watertown School District is larger, geographically, than Brookings School District. See http://www.doe.sd.gov/ofm/documents/SchoolMaps09-10.pdf

Perhaps the demographic data sheds light on this:

                    Watertown Brookings
                    Average Age: 35.1 23.5
                    Housholds with Child under 18: 2774 1782
                    Housholds with member over 65: 2046 1214
                    Total Households: 8385 6971

Over half the households in Watertown have children under 18 or members over 65. While under half do in Brookings. Conclusion, college students in dorms and young professionals in Brookings.

Also, when I completed my census form, I listed my son as attending school away from home. This is how the census avoids double counting college students.

                      JackJD-
I drove through Watertown on my way back to Clark this weekend and I noticed that nothing has happened at the BWW in the two months since I went through Watertown. Whats the deal? Is it still happening? I asked my parents and they hadn't heard anything.

Not sure, WestSide...it seems the building project is just stalled. I haven't heard anything definitive.

They started working on the 2nd BWW in Sioux Falls and then it just stopped. Doesn't sound like its going to be going anytime soon.

Let's see....Watertown's BWW restaurant project seems to be stalled but in the meantime, MMA fighting seems to be thriving. Geez, that's a little embarassing.

Well the MMA issue is something that is within the realm of control of city government, but the city has no control over the decisions of BBW and judging from the post from SF, they got things on hold right now, waiting for improvement in the economy perhaps? Who knows.
