    Rx Disposal

    If there is a Pharmacist on the board, I have a question regarding disposal of prescription drugs.

    I have some Coumadin (warfarin) that I no longer need. I have a felling that flushing this stuff isn't the best plan. How should I dispose of it?

    It's Rat poison! So you could use it as such...

    Actually you just missed a med disposal in SF, I believe.

    SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Federal drug enforcement officials says South Dakotans brought 582 pounds of unused and out-of-date prescription drugs to collection sites to be destroyed. The Argus Leader reports that there were 16 locations throughout South Dakota participating in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday. The free and anonymous service was sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.

    So I guess contact the DEA...

      Nice suggestion but, not much of a rat issue here in SF. Squirrels yes, but that may not be safe for other critters.

      I may have to take it with me to Lewis next time I go there and ask the pharmacy to dispose of it for me.

          If there is a pharmacy where you live that is doing the "Take Away" program they can accept warfarin. If you don't have a "Take Away" program in your area, put the tablets in a ziplock with some kitty litter or coffee grounds and a small amount of water and dispose of them in the trash. The "Take Away" program would see that the tablets were incinerated properly. The program you missed last weekend is a different program in that the drugs could be contol drugs and had to be turned into law inforcement...not so with warfarin.             Thank you for the disposal info. The quantity of the medication I have left over is such that it could be quite toxic in the wrong environment and I do not want anyone hurt.

              Better yet, take it to the local police station... tell them you want to get rid of it, you don't need it any more and they'll dispose it for you.

                Walgreen just announced a program for disposing of unused perscriptions. You can buy an envelope for $2.99 from them and mail it in.

                    That would be the prefered option if I didn't live in SF. The city does frown upon incineration within the city limits.

                      Wait, I could look it up in the SF Code of Ordinances, but I'm pretty sure you can have firepits. I guess that's what I should've said vs bonfire. I'd just throw them in the firepit, assuming it wouldn't give off some sort of noxious fumes.
