BTW: I wonder how often flow rate comes into play....
I looked it up yesterday to answer the same question for myself. Wiki and Google are sure easy tools to use. While reading a related article, I came across a story of a house burning to the ground because the firefighters on scene couldn't find a hydrant with a high enough flow rate to extinguish the hot attic fire that developed. It took them an hour to find a good one, and by then it was too late(that city didn't color-code and the crews didn't have hydrant maps). On a firefighter messageboard, I saw a post about one city using the codes due to fragile water mains. The mains were so old that, if the pumpers were pulling max pressure, the mains would collapse under the stress. The codes in that case warned the crews what rate to set the pumps for.

So what you are saying is that, in addition to location, that the color of the hydrant your possible home purchase is next to is pretty important!

Who would have thought that the smack thread on here would be such a wealth of knowledge? I better put in some smack...

Yeah. Next thing you know, your realtor will be making a big deal about that when showing a home, "it's close to Patrick Henry middle school and several high flow fire hydrants!"

This may explain a lot. People in Vermillion are drinking water from their wastewater plant. That's why they are all full of s__t.

Amazing! But don't they have some fine Vietnamese carry out in Vermillion?

This thread has taken a few odd turns.

KFC Markets 'Fiery' Wings On Fire Hydrants

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Fast-food chain KFC is giving two Indiana cities $7,500 so it can emblazon founder Colonel Sanders' face on their hydrants and fire extinguishers to promote new "fiery" chicken wings.

                          I think we can declare a thread-winner at this point . . .

Amen to that...they could hitch a low-flow pumper to me and all they would get would be a collapsed hydrant.

Hmmmm...does that have anything to do with "plumbing"...might have to reconsider my standards, if it does.
