I sincerly hope that if UND does get rid of the name they also get rid of any other native american thing at UND including the heritage center adn specail scholarships. On a final note do you really think the logo will just disappear? It will not in fact it will probably come out in full force, I actually just picked up several SIoux sweatshirt for my three children and my husband and myself today adn we will wear them to every hockey game we attend (and we are season ticket holders)

I think lakes is quoting someone.

I think it's hilarious that an admittedly white woman is so insistent that she be able to wear an article of clothing that has the head of an Indian and the name of a loose confederacy of tribes.

Seinfeld used to do a routine about how we're all just rooting for laundry, well, IMO, this lady is doing that in spades.

Up until that last post, I never knew LakesBison was a female. By (her) fire I always envisioned Lakes as some crusty, old, angry man. Wow, i won't be able to sleep now contemplating this revelation. Picked up a Sioux jersey for my husband???

That post by Lakes finally got me to post on this board for the first time in almost a year.

"(LakesBison), what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."--the Principal from Billy Madison

WOW!!!! Someone FINALLY grabbed the reins of this runaway stagecoach.

I'm seriously impressed. SERIOUSLY impressed at how concrete this directive is.

Looks like the Summt League adding USD made them work a little faster in Grand Forks. I wonder how long it will be until UND is in the Summit.

Okay, I did a little more reading and I'm going to back away from part of what I wrote just a little bit. I think you could safely argue that the vote does mean that SL officially supports the nickname for now. Prior to the vote, the tribal council signed a resolution supporting the referendum. I've gotta assume that means they proactively decided to align their policy with whatever the results of the vote would be. However, it is true that the vote is not a binding one, and the council has the final say. If UND does try to keep the name, I'm certain they'll want a council resolution that reinforces Tuesday's vote.

According to the BIA, there were about 5,000 enrolled members in 1998. According to the 2000 census, about 4,400 were living on the reservation. Figuring 75% of the enrolled members are of voting age(that's a complete guess), and that the size of the tribe hasn't changed that much in ten years, there should be around 3,800 eligible voters for a voter turnout of about 30%. There's a lot of guesses in there, so take it with a big grain of salt.
