Just tell yourself, "I can quit anytime I want! I just choose NOT to. I'm NOT addicted!"
My bad, SturgisJeff. I was really confused, reading that out of context.Originally posted by JackFan96Well, I don't get to sit in Mom's basement and watch sports all day

Enjoying the subpar ranking assigned to USD's dorms is, IMO, ludicrous--seeing how SDSU's dorms are pretty much exactly the same. They were, by and large, built at the same time by the same architects under the same administration.....

Originally posted by KUlawJack View PostIts uglier than sin, seriously. It looks like a giant grain bin. I believe SturgisJeff posted a comparative picture in an earlier thread. Football was meant to be played outside so your argument is lost immediately because you try to compare an indoor sports arena to an open air stadium. Fail. Also basketball was not meant to be played in a dome. That might be just as bad. Just reminding you. And.....capacity. Good thing udot doesn't play in a football stadium the size of CAS because it would look even emptier against Culver Stockton. It would be hard to say there were 14,342 fans at a game with 2,418.
Also, the Dykhouse Center. If you think for one second that it won't spruce up CAS you are off your rocker. We have tons of space to reconstruct and add on to CAS. Got a lot of room for that in the Dakota Dump? I believe we have a brand new softball and baseball complex that looks nice, just waiting on some more money to finish up some things. How's udot's baseball field looking? Or do they play in the dome for baseball too?
(Apologize for thread drift. I am out of here.)
Heres how we all see the dome.

Thanks to BOR politics, the U has deprived SDSU of MFAs, BFAs, and graduate degrees in Philosophy and History, as well as limitations on the nature of the English master's degrees. The U has also jealously guarded its master's in psychology. Why do I say 'deprived of'? Because SDSU's enrollment and faculty in those deparments (excepting psych) exceeds that of the U. Moreover, SDSU's faculty in those departments are tenured with terminal degrees and are more than equal to the task of superintending a master's program. I'd mention CS&T, but I'm not up on it.
The U lags SDSU in the size and growth of its departments in so many areas of the liberal arts that I've adopted the expedient of simply referring to the U as home to the law, med, and business schools, as there is dang little else there that exceeds what is offerred at SDSU.
I know that you're not going to enjoy hearing it, and you're probably going to protest loudly about what I've said, but if you can find a legitimate reason why an English program with 7 full professors and over 30 full and part-time faculty can only offer a narrow focus MA while an English program with only 3 full professors and around 20 full and part time faculty offers a Ph.D, I'd love to hear it.Last edited by zooropa; 03-06-2009, 07:26 PM.

I lived on third floor Binneweis (I spell that differently each time I have to use the name -- even the correct spelling doesn't look right) for two years starting the fall of 1972. That dorm was a war zone back then. At least we had new carpet in the day room (the carpet the prior year was burned by students).
With the addition of the new Student Center, the Med School (take a tour of that place! It's impressive.) and the new business school, and with the renovations of the science labs underway or soon to be underway, USD is getting spruced up and in five years will look like a completely different school compared to two years ago. Slagle Hall, the auditorium in the administration building, is undergoing deep, surgical renovations and will be impressive when completed (I've seen the plans -- it reminds me a little of the beautiful Northrup Auditorium at the U of Minnesota).
USD has a campus architect who knows preservation (I think she came to USD from either U of Nebraska or U of Kansas).
While my roots go deep at SDSU, I have to keep in mind one of my sons went to USD and had a great time and got a great education. (I guarantee that some of you who delight in reading the Princeton Review survey, will have a kid or two who go to USD.)
Come on, everybody: The Princeton survey is intended to provoke a laugh or two. In my opinion, this isn't good smack.

Sorry. Not liking it.
At least the new Avera building matches context. So does the Student Union remodel--and the new engineering facilities. This? Not liking it, not one bit.
It also, unless they move things, pens the Art Department into a quadrangle of residences.

Re: USD makes list of worst dorms by Princeton Review
I will probably never have a kid going to USD since I have never had kids that were mine biologically or by adoption. I did have a older brother who attended USD in 1951-52, and guess where he lived while on campus? You got it Julian Hall, so that dorm has been around a few years and sure its served its purpose and probably could use another face lift and I would agree with JackJD, its a South Dakota problem. Our friends to the North have over decades poured lot more money into higher education especially at the University of North Dakota, much more than what was spent at USD and SDSU combined. If it were not for the logo, issue, UND would be well down the path to D1. They might have been the first one to go under different leadership than Kupchella.
Also South Dakota legislature members seem to buy into this notion that SD has too many state assisted institutions, but look at North Dakota, they have 12 or more and yes some of them are vocational and trade, but they done a much better job of presenting education opportunties to all parts of the state. We could do a better job and probably Julian is not the only fire trap in the state, there has to be others in Brookings, Aberdeen, Spearfish, Rapid City and Madison.Last edited by Nidaros; 03-07-2009, 12:41 AM.
