South Dakota Football Team Jumps to Eighth in AFCA Poll; D2football.com Ranks Coyotes Fourth

VERMILLION, S.D. (Sept. 27, 2005) -- The South Dakota Football Team (5-0), which leads the nation in scoring, rushing, total offense and pass efficiency, has moved up six spots to eighth in the American Football Coaches Association poll that was released on Tuesday. USD is fourth in the D2football.com media poll, which also was announced on Tuesday.

Two other national polls have ranked South Dakota sixth or higher this week. USD is ranked third in the CollegeSportsReport.com Division II Route 66 rankings and sixth by the Don Hansen Weekly Football Gazette.

South Dakota, which defeated then-4th ranked Nebraska-Omaha, 59-14, on Sept. 24 at the DakotaDome, will travel to Augustana on Saturday (Oct.1) for a 1 p.m. NCC game at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The Coyotes lead the nation in total offense (631.0 yards per game), rushing offense (310.6 yards per game), scoring offense (59.8 points per game) and individual passing efficiency (Wes Beschorner, 272.6).

I'm with you SDSU/BHS. But I do wonder when they play UND? That's when we'll see how good (or not) they are.

I'll take the high road on this one. Kudos to USD for padding their schedule with fluff opponents so they can run up the score and stats over the first [glb]five[/glb] games. If they are truly as good as their record and stats indicate they will indeed prove it over the remaining six games.

I updated my signature for the first time in six years.

              JBNJBQ,

You must be talking about UNC and NDSU since they have actually won something. Big fish usually do big things. By the way "CatchEmAll" Your avatar is cool. Hope Heiden doesn't decide to take up riding motorcycles.

Good point. You can't tell anything from playing the #4 team in the country. We need to see how USD does against the top 3 teams in the country before we make any judgments. This still proves nothing.

                  Sports Buff,

You don't need to play the top three teams to convince me. I am sold.

Re: South Dakota Football Team Jumps to Eighth in

I will also take the high road. USD looked damned impressive this weekend. However, they are usually a different team on grass. Augie usually has one game a year where they knock off someone they don't have a chance against on paper. It used to be NDSU when we were still in the NCC. They seemed to always play NDSU well no matter what their record. I think this weekend's game will closer than most would think.

By the way, that Beschorner kid looks like a hell of a QB. Their running back looks like the prototypical astroturf player. Quick and shifty. Ranek he is not, but few are. Ranek is in the top 5 ALL TIME in the NCAA for rushing. Most of the time with 10 men in the box to stop him. Still, Logan's a very good looking RB.

Re: South Dakota Football Team Jumps to Eighth in

That is some great analysis of USD having troubles on grass. I hope that turns out to be the case. Unfortunately Augie got turf last year at Howard Wood but maybe some other team will bother them on a grass field.
Ranek was unbelievable and just punished us in the mid 90's and that was when we were very good. But Logan made some moves that I never saw ranek make. RAnek was probably a better back but Logan seems more electrifying. I knew we were in trouble when on the opening kick we had him pinned at the 3rd yard line and he juked his way out to about the 18 with nothing other than pure athleticism. Amazing.

Speed is speed, and USD has some pretty quick skilled players. Logan and Beschorner are downright fast. As for Augie... not so much. It'll be a blowout.
