As far as I can tell, it's not even a direct quote from Forbes. It's a quote from this article on the USD website that talks about the Forbes rankings."We are excited about the endorsement as the best in the Dakotas, but we are equally excited about where USD stands in our athletic conferences,” said Scott Pohlson, USD vice president of Marketing, Enrollment & University Relations.“What I like about this, about Forbes is that it basically takes into what the conversation is nationally right now. It’s about you know what’s the return on investment. And from what we can see in terms of what the Center for College Affordability and Productivity did with the rankings with Forbes. It basically says we’re a good value and the best in the Dakotas, so that’s what’s exciting about it,” says Pohlson.
So really, if the billboard were 100% accurate (and grammatically correct), it would read "Best in the Dakotas" - Scott Pohlson. They could have also created a billboard that didn't have a direct quote. I would make one of my students rewrite any paper that incorrectly sourced a direct quote, but I only teach 8th graders.

And even after all that, if anyone still thinks it's somehow a Forbes screw up: it still had to be approved by whoever does USD's marketing (Lawrence and Schiller?), and they would have to have whatever they created approved by USD's people.
So in the end, it's still USD's fault.

i feel some pity toward that place. They just can't seem to get it right when it comes to putting out a message.

This PBS article also quotes Pholson about the Forbes rankings.
And if you click through to the actual Forbes article that is linked to both of those sites, you won't find any quote that directly says "Best in the Dakotas" (or "Best in the Dakota's").

Alright ... I'm going to tread lightly here.
I posted the above this morning at 8:13.
The following was published by the Dakota Free Press at 12:24. http://dakotafreepress.com/2015/12/2...otation-marks/
USD’s writers’ greater error may be those improper quotation marks. Forbes’s 2015 university rankings does not use the phrase “Best in the Dakota’s” or “Best in the Dakotas” at any point. The only place I find that exact phrase in print with reference to Forbes’s rankings is in USD’s own August 4 press release and the press’s subsequent coverage of USD’s staff’s own trumpeting of those rankings.
Now, I'm not claiming that no one else could have followed the same steps I did and come to the exact same conclusion. It just feels weird that I posted that this morning, and then that went up on the DFP this afternoon.
Hope it's just a coincidence!Last edited by RabbitObsessed; 12-28-2015, 02:04 PM.Originally posted by JackFan96Well, I don't get to sit in Mom's basement and watch sports all day

Re: Another great U sign
So, the sign apparently carries a made-up direct quotation that is misattributed to Forbes magazine? That makes the punctuation error seem incidental. Maybe it's time for the state's No. 2 university to devote a day or two of classroom instruction in Marketing 101 to ethics in billboard promotions. This space for lease.

I think South Dakota residents discount what comes out of Vermillion. What impact does that have on student recruitment? (Does a billboard that is well done have much impact on attracting students to a particular university? I'm not sure about that.)
Visitors traveling on I-90 seeing that billboard -- if they read it -- have to laugh about the apostrophe. That sign risks adding to a false image that the State has more than its share of idiots and that's why it's important the billboard be taken down or its punctuation corrected.

But, over the long haul, the latest marketing foulup adds to a history of such foulups...we may be calling that a "tradition" soon. I think back to USD coming out with the short-lived (the short life being perfectly understandable) "South Dakota's team", U-dot, etc. The recent "FearEd" program is another one that just seems to be ill-conceived and I don't think it'll be around long. The message on the new billboard suggests there's a lack of integrity in the marketing dept at the junior college -- an effort to spin and shade information apparently printed in Forbes Magazine. (The apostrophe can be blamed on an honest human error -- can the same be said about the message?)
