Like it or not, I can vouch for Yoteforever's accuracy. He was a member of the vaunted 1978 NCC championship team.

Well, some of us also were around that era and actually, if any drums were beating it was on our side.... Earlier in the decade for USD, maybe.
        But....
        '75 Jacks won, 24-22
        '76 17-17 tie
        '77 USD won, 15-10
        '78 USD won, 24-7
'79, Jacks won BOTH games, 26-21 and 33-28.

So yeah, you won two games, one very close, one kinda competitive, but Jacks won three and tied one in the last half of that decade .......If that's your version of beating someone like a drum - well, welcome to the MVC.

NoVaJack and I remember those 70's.

Darned Dwight "Duke" Duncomb and his backflips. There were the Van brothers, Tommy (played pro), Booker and I think there was one named Chevy or VW Van. (Okay, I made up the third one.) USD had a opened a little pipeline from Florida (seems Miami Dolphins owner and USD grad Joe Robbie was doing a little scouting--of course, Robbie didn't have to watch his team because SDSU's Jim Langer was pounding holes in defensive lines every Sunday).

Tell you what, sportsfans, the fans from both schools had a great time in those years. Will it be fun when the series resumes or will a few knuckleheads drive it into the ditch?

In my memory there were a few knuckleheads down in Verm in the '70's. In '76 I attended a game at the New Stadium, USD vs WIU (yes the Leathernecks). USD media guide has it listed as a 28-7 win. Actually the game was called due to a bench clearing brawl, with a few spectators. Rumor had it that the spectators were members of a certain fraternity. A significant loss of decorum at best.

Point is U-dot has a history of being less than generous in competion, even in their better years. It is though evidence that Frat Boys can get excited about playing someone other than SDSU.

The only one that matters in this debate is playing each other. With the merger, the skirt is now off. Neither team can hide.

(not wise to use comparitive scores)
Since we're using "back when I played" I would like to point out that "back when I played" we were 3-1 against USD, 3-1 against Augie (only loss was due to a BS call, but I'm not bitter), we won at least one game against every team in the conference - including going 2-2 against NDSU, and we beat UC-Davis at Cali when they were ranked #6 in the nation. Just sayin.

I started in all 8 games against USD and Augie. Most fun I ever had playing football - even the 2 losses. That's why I'm excited USD is in the MoValley. Football in the Dakotas is just more fun when USD and SDSU get to battle.

For all you doubters, from one who actually played. Rep points for reality check. (I would say beating USD three of four is a "beat 'em like a drum" kerblastification, wouldn't you?)

                  Knuckleheads? Oh well.............

That game was the final one of the year. Western Illinois came into the game ranked and needed a win to secure a playoff berth. There were (2) Sioux City Central players on that team, one was named Greg Lee and the other I can't remember. Regardless, the game was not called because of Frat Boys, or Fans.

With 2 minutes and change remaining, our strong safety intercepted a pass and started running down the "visitor" sidelines. I actually blocked what I thought was the last guy and I looked behind to watch his butt run by me. But it never happened. In fact, seconds later, I was surrounded by their players as well as our strong safety. As he was running down the sidelines, someone from the Western Illinois bench came onto the field and tackled him. A brief fight erupted, only between players. The refs the called the game as emotions were running high. There wasn't another play run. So there was 2 plus minutes left and we had the ball (should have been a touchdown).

That's the story. Sorry, no bad apple USD fans or frat boys. Just players and coaches.

You must have forgot about the first five years. No big deal.

                    1971: USD 37 SDSU 18
                    1972: USD 42 SDSU 27
                    1973 USD 36 SDSU 10
                    1974 USD 20 SDSU 6

I also believe USD won the 1970 game as well, but tat I can't verify yet, but will look it up.

I agree with you MilwaukeeJack, if you were a player, then wasn't a more fun game to play in than the rivalry game. I wan't a native South Dakotan, but I quickly learned of the intensity of the rivalry.

This isn't smack, ok? But I believe for those that played the game. the resumption of the game is far more important than those that never played. It might be because they don't fully understand what it is all about. It isn't just Saturday, it is the days leading up to it.

You beating USD the majority of the time I am positive will be remebered by you for life. I know I will never forget it. I loved playing in Brookings. Your AD and coach would never let USD dress down at the stadium, we always had to dress at Frost and walk down. In '78, we had (6) SDHP escort us into the stadium. The booing, crap thrown, taunts...it was actually a blast. ( Iknow, I know...USD has bad fans also) What a great rivalry. There will be none like it in the MVFC. (of course for NDSU and Delaware)

I don't think that is necessarily true. I didn't play FB or BB but I spent a lot of time with those who did and I still spend a lot of time with them. None of them missed the rivalry and none of them are as ecstatic as some seem to be at the resumption of the rivalry. Now, that may just be an issue with association. However, you're being to general when you say its more important to those that played in the games.

Alternatively, I find it interesting that fans and former players at Augie and usd generally considered the game against SDSU "THE GAME OF THE YEAR" while most SDSU athletes understood it was "THE GAME OF THE YEAR" for Augie and usd but not necessarily for them.

I think USD won 7 straight before the 1975 game. I was at the 75 game and seem to remember the USD cheerleaders cheering, "beat state, eight straight."

I'm pretty sure the game didn't mean anything to them. Nah.

They were dreaming of playing Delaware

I'll give you a break anytime you need one.

I didn't say the game didn't mean anything to them. I said they didn't miss the rivalry and aren't ecstatic that it is returning. Keep in mind these are players from the late 80's and early 90's.

Are you implying that they aren't being honest or that I'm not being honest? Should I believe instead that any past accomplishments or future ones are only as relevant as a victory or loss to one school?

Sure, the emotions associated with the State/U game are high and I think its great this it sparks a debate but SDSU was doing fine without the game and I refuse to believe the resumption of the rivalry is going to make that much of a difference.

What were the attendance numbers from the last few FB games between SDSU and USD in Brookings and Vermillion?

Just to clarify/remind...everyone dressed at Frost Arena, not just USD. There was no place for the visiting team at CAS until the Dykehouse Center opened up. All visitors dressed at Frost and walked over.
