    Re: Layne Somsen's future

It's about time we move Layne's thread up to the Pro Sports section. He's earned it.

      Re: Layne Somsen's future

Layne got his first win for the Bakersfield Blaze last night and struck out five of the seven batters he faced.

They are called Blaze because it gets hotter than blazes in the summer there.

Layne pitching well in Bakersfield. ERA under two in five appearances spanning 10 1/3 innings. The only two runs he's given up were, I believe, on a two run homer.

The success of the three Jackrabbit pitchers has been unreal.

74, any additional info for us?

          Re: Layne Somsen's future

Layne has been sent back to Dayton (low-A).

He pitched well in Bakersfield when he first got there, but has struggled in the last three weeks or so. Surprising since he has been dominate up until then. Hopefully he can right the ship and get back to more dominance.

Hopefully the Ship is righted Montana. Layne is back in Bakersfield to start the second half.

              Re: Layne Somsen's future

Layne has been back pitching for Bakersfield over the past couple of weeks, after missing some time with an injury. Since his return he has pitched 8 innings over 4 appearances, giving up 1 earned run. Hopefully he is ready to finish strong, and show that some of his struggles earlier this year were injury related.

                Re: Layne Somsen's future

Great to hear he is back on the mound (and doing great in the innings he has had)! Know dealing with an injury problem is really frustrating for anybody...doubly so when you are trying to break into MLB!

                  Re: Layne Somsen's future

Layne had another good outing and now has given up 3 ER over his last 20 1/3 innings while striking out 15.

Layne seems to be back on the right track after coming off the DL. His last 10 games he has gone for 18.1 innings with 14 K's and an ERA of 0.98

Glad to see he is back on track. I have to assume he tried to tough this injury out and that is the reason he got hit hard.

                        Re: Layne Somsen's future

Layne was on the mound as the Bakersfield Blaze ended their season with a playoff series loss to Visalia. Not sure why, but Layne started the game, cruised through the first three innings but then got tagged in the fourth. Probably not a surprising showing for someone who has been coming out of the bullpen all season long. Here is a write up of the game: http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp...recap&sid=t423

Overall, a good year for Somsen. He ended with a 3-3 record, 3.05 ERA with 64 strikeouts, 20 walks in 32 appearances covering 59 innings. Very respectable season between A and high-A ball.

Heard that Layne is set to start out at AA in Pensacola this season. This is a great thing for Somsen, who posted some good relief numbers last year in A ball.

I went to a few Cincinnati games this spring, didn't see him at any of them, but was looking, hopefully next year, or maybe even fall league

He threw with the AA guys this spring Joe. Many games and teams around that complex.

That is what I figured, I only went to one game in Goodyear other games were on the road, still I'm kicking myself for not walking around the minor league complex there.
