  • UC Davis cuts 4 sports

(First noticed mention of this on Bisonville.)
From the UCDavis athletic office, 4/16/10: Four sports cut: (1) wrestling; (2) men's indoor track and field; (3) men's swimming & diving; and (4) women's rowing.

The Aggies had several wrestlers advance to the NCAA Championships.

That really sucks. Always hate seeing wrestling programs getting cut.

I'm not sure I get why they would cut indoor track and field, unless they cut outdoor too?? Why recruit athletes and just deny them the opportunity to compete indoors as well??? I suppose there is some money saving, but seems weird to me!

It seems weird to cut indoor track but I think it was a cut the California school thought wouldn't do too much damage. There are relatively few indoor facilities in the middle and southern part of California: just aren't needed because the athletes can train outside every day.

I been in Sacremento in December and experienced some crappy weather, cold foggy and not really good for outdoor training. Davis is just west of Sacremento and a good 500 miles north of Los Angeles. The weather during the winter months is not as predictable as it is from Santa Barbara and south. I suspect the State of California has some tough choices to make and some affect athletics which really explains the cuts. Politically, the state budget is a mess, and Gov Arnold is hanging it up after this term and you really cant blame him, as he has tried to govern but to no avail. With a state that has grown like topsy for about 80 years and with mulitiple demands for services, its a challenge for anyone of any persuasion of politics.
