Their basketball program is already in trouble and if they chose that name they might as well fold the program as their recruiting pool would be cut in half. If you're a Sioux fan look at this as an opportunity not a negative.

How about they work on old T Denny and call themselves the University of North Dakota running Sanfords. After the 10 year lawsuite on whether the Ralph will have to be torn down will end bad for UND and they will need Sanford to build them a new hockey arena. I can already see the wrecking balls from heaven being swung by Engelsted himself.

but odds are its going to be Roughriders for Teddy Roosevelt

I honestly think they should consider the nickname "Huskarls" (also spelled Huscarls) (pronounced House-carl), as it would honor the regions Scandinavian history, but would also be unique (unlike, say, the Vikings).

What is a Huskarl? Glad you asked! In short, they were Scandanavian Body Guards for Kings and Lords.

I like the Huskarls, surprisingly, I was totally uninformed on the terminology, but I have not spent a great deal of time reading about the Vikings. As a percentage, of Norweigain Ameircans from prior censuses, North Dakota has the highest percent of Norwegian American of any state in the United states, so Huskarl would be appropriate. UND also has a Scandavian studies department and in honor of all Norweigians, the Huskarl designation is indeed fitting. Too bad the Hockey folks can't buy into this kind of thinking.
