  • Game Over...for Fighting Sioux

It appears as though the UND Fighting Sioux are no longer Fighting nor Sioux.

The state Board of Higher Education decided today to retire the UND Fighting Sioux logo and nickname and directed Chancellor Bill Goetz to so advise UND President Robert Kelley and urge him to begin the transition.

The board's president, Richie Smith, brought up the logo issue at the end of an all-day meeting, noting that as the board convened this morning the state Supreme Court affirmed a district court ruling that struck down an injunction that had been sought by several members of the Spirit Lake Sioux tribe.
I am wondering how epic the meltdown will be at SiouxSports.com. Will be fun to watch the reactions:

It's the best thing for UND in the long run, even though it may hurt for a lot of their fan base in the short run. Having a 3rd party in control of a business's nickname and logo is an awful situation for administrators to be in and issues would always continue to arise as long as the nickname remained.

I just don't get it.....from EITHER perspective. What a huge waste of time and money.

UND just needs to move on, pick a new name, sell a bunch of more merchandise and enjoy being in the Summit and try to get their fball team in a real conference. It's just a dang name and many more high profile D1 schools have done it without a hiccup.

The tribes now need to put the same passion toward issues that REALLY AFFECT their people.

Notice this is an AP story written by Dave Kolpack, who I believe is or was on the Fargo Forum staff. Apparently the opposition is still there, but not front page news. I think they can not change the President or the AD mind on this and finding a conference for most of their sports is the priority. Hockey or no hockey, finding a conference is finally trumping hockey in institutuional importance.
