  • Proposed NCAA Div I Rule Change

On Tuesday Tidbits today, TV reported that the NCAA is proposing a discussion of some new legislation that will impact Div I schools. One change would require Div I schools meet 75% of the grant-in-aid maximum in conference sports, up from 50% now.

Where are we now and what effect will implementing this have on us, The Summit League and the Mo Valley Football Conference?

There other proposals that will make it much more difficult to go from Div II to Div I.

We are at 100% in football, and men's and women's basketball. I think we are at essentially 100% in all of the women's sports as well. The men's sports are a little lower but I think we are probably well within the 75% range when averaged over all sports. If any of you have an older copy of the annual report, it had a list of the number of allowed scholarships by sport and the number planned for several years.

I'm sure we would have no problem with this proposed change. We went from 90+ to 200+ (205 I think) scholarships since leaving D-II. Being at 100% on football (which I believe USD is also at), goes a long ways to putting you at 75% for men's sports just because of the numbers. And we're at gender equity without a doubt on women's sports (now, USD could be in a little more trouble here me thinks).

Maybe this will slow Augie and USF down. They seem very ambituious of late plus 100% to those private schools means 20k to 50k for each scholarship.
