I guess I would rather see SDSU drop men's and women's tennis and men's and women's swimming before baseball.

Men's/women tennis eliminates 12 slots and 1, maybe two coaches.

Mens/women's swimming eliminates maybe 12-15 women (only 5/6 schollies at most), and men's has 1 to 3 schollies, and probably fields 10-15 max. Coach Erickson has been there since 1975 (swam for SDSU for four years), and maybe a couple of assistants now.

We're lucky to have baseball as we're on the road 80% of the season due to the SD cold & snow. Maybe rcjacks can give the #'s of baseball players and coaches, bu if 35 is a reasonable #, then can get a lot of $ savings cutting 1 mens sport rather than 4 sports.

BTW, SDSU has a reasonable chance of being competititve in the summit in swimming and tennis. We have a long ways to go to knock ORU off in baseball.

Interesting, their current players do not have to sit out a year....potential for some good transfers!!!

Baseball only has 4 scholarships and 2 ft coaches. The big expense is travel. I would guess we'd be more likely to see wrestling dropped before baseball, but that is just a guess.

This is what I was thinking. The press release mentions state funding that has been cut which resulted in a gap between revenues and expenditures. Fortunately SDSU does not rely on funding from the state for spots. I believe the money we do receive from the legislature is used to fund the utilities of the facility. I am thinking a cut in state funding might not be as brutal at SDSU as it appears to be at UNI.

I don't think we should get ahead of ourselves in regards to dropping sports, especially since it hasn't even been mentioned at SDSU, but just to get the facts out there...

Baseball - 28 players on roster
              Mens Swimming - 20 swimmers
              Womens Swimming - 23 swimmers

I believe baseball might have two full time coaches, and swimming has the same. It's hard to say that baseball can't be competitive in the Summit, they finished 2nd last year if I recall correctly. And Oakland might be just as far ahead of the pack in swimming as ORU is in baseball.

Plus, I would say that there is far more tradition at SDSU in baseball or wrestling than there is in swimming or tennis.

                Re: UNI dropping baseball

How about we stop talking about eliminating sports at SDSU because another school is planning on doing that? Every year an institution somewhere drops a sport because of finances. In almost every year an institution somewhere adds a sport also, so why don't we talk about what sports SDSU is going to add?

                    Re: UNI dropping baseball

It's quite unfortunate that UNI is dropping its baseball program. That said, I think that it is fairly infeasible for SDSU to consider dropping any program in the immediate or near future. For starters, SDSU made it clear that dropping programs was not an option in order to be Title IX-compliant or to make the budgets work for the D-1 transition. Second, any elimination of programs would have negative impact on alumni support and fundraising. Finally, SDSU would not want to risk negative statewide attention (and the full wrath of Stu) by cutting a program so soon after moving up to D-1, especially when support will be needed in the state for items such as a new football stadium.

It would be a lot easier for SDSU to stretch the budgets and increase revenues that it would be to axe a program and face the ramifications.

                      Re: UNI dropping baseball

I learned yesterday that Oregon is fielding a baseball team this year for the first time in 28 years. I was shocked to learn that a Pac Ten school didn't have a baseball program. I wonder if their motivation was driven by the success of their in-state rival? Hmmmm, that sure sounds like a familiar story . . .

The battle appears to be getting ugly in Panther land:

                              2. Plan of Attack.
Subject to collecting sufficient funding, we have engaged a Washington D.C. attorney specializing in college sports cases like ours. He will proceed to send a letter to UNI demanding that the UNI Baseball Program be restored immediately and stating that a lawsuit will be filed fourteen days later if UNI refuses.

Assuming that UNI does not restore the program within the time period set forth in the letter, then plaintiffs with legal standing (including players and perhaps others who have been harmed by UNI’s actions) will file suit. The suit will seek a preliminary injunction. Our legal theory will be based on Title IX (reverse discrimination) and the 14th Amendment (equal protection). Our counsel and several other attorneys who are members of our group believe that we have a good chance of success.

Importantly, if we are successful, then UNI will be forced to restore the Baseball Program and we will not be required to provide any of the funding going forward. A win would save us money and would eliminate the inequity of UNI Baseball paying its way while other UNI athletic programs are not compelled to do so. The cost of litigation is estimated to be less than $60,000 including all costs, expenses, and legal fees.
