  • Nothing else to do in Bismarck...

The Grand Forks Nazi Party just introduced this bill in the ND House of Representatives, which essentially would require NDSU to play some other specific team every year, no questions asked. I don't think this bill has a snowball's chance in hell, but it's annoying all the same.

    The Bisonville thread is here.

I personally find it a little insulting that some fancypants politicians are trying to force a sports rivalry that does not exist.

What do you Jackistanians think about this attempt at diverting our rivalry elsewhere???

What would the likely reaction be in Jackistan if some Mangy Puppy fans in Pierre ever brought something like this up???

I agree, politicians have no business in athletics, they shouldn't decide who should play who and when. Leave it up for the schools to decide

I think the politicians should tend to the business of the state and not athletics. They try to control it the best they can and then when a state school needs money for a sports facility, they say the school has to raise its own funds. I don't have a problem with being self-supporting with facilities, but then stay out of the rest of it, too.

Not a good idea at all.

Not surprised. Utah and Utah State are required to play every year. In Washington (& in Montana), there's an actual law that requires the two main universities (UW and Wazzu) to play in the same conference. Thus, why Montana won't ever move up to FBS (I-A) because it would require Montana State to move up as well and MSU doesn't want to.

Worst idea ever. This is not good for either school. If the SD legislature tried this, I would be furious. Things will work out when they do and legislators that do not understand the planning and budgeting issues that go into this need to shut up and do some research before throwing stuff onto the floor. Embarrassing.

Yikes. That is a terrifying handicap to place on an institution.

Somebody told me it was flat-out ridiculed on the floor. I'd like to hear what was said.

OUCH! I wonder how it ever made it out of Committee. Plus you'd think the House leadership wouldn't even put it to a vote if it was that unpopular. I guess they wanted to make a point?

From what I can tell, two of the original sponsors voted against the Bill.

In North Dakota, the committee only makes a Pass / Do Not Pass recommendation after the hearing.

I'm thinking that the sponsors were likely too ignorant (or something) to foresee the $#!t-firestorm their silly little proposal would kick up.

Ahhh. Thanks for the clarification. Given the outcome, the issue shouldn't make its way into the North Dakota statehouse again for a looooooong time. Hopefully our legislators in Pierre will take heed.
