Tubby Smith is having an incredible effect on recruiting at Minnesota. He has landed two of the top wings in the country who happen to be Minneapolis Metro Recruits in Royce White of Hopkins who is a teamate of Marcus Williams who the Jacks are evidently looking at and Rodney Williams Jr of Cooper. Williams is a high flying athlete who will create some buzz in the barn. Check out this video from the Timberwolves Shootout:

Tubby has done a great job with the Gophers and it looks like Williams is going to be very good for the Gophers.

I went to the cities last weekend and watched a Timberwolves game on Sat and a Gophers game on Sunday. Tubby has it going at the U of M. Place was just about packed out for a Sunday afternoon game. It is worth the price of admission to just watch him coach. He roams the sideline at the Barn and none of the assistants talk to him unless he addresses them first. He really watches the matchups and really looks to be in control of his team. Hung around for a little bit to talk to Colton Iverson and watched the Tubby show in they gym while waiting around after the game. The favorite t-shirt of the students is "It's Tubby Time at the U of M".

After SDSU played them I said they were an average team that would struggle in the Big Ten. I stand corrected. Their guards get better every game. It should make our guards feel better that it wasn't just them who were out-quicked significantly by the UM guards. Their young point guard (name escapes me, but he about broke Mac's ankles on one crossover) is about as quick as they come.

I think you are talking about Nolan...

Al Nolen is a great player. He makes occasional mistakes with turnovers, etc with being a point guard, but he makes up for that with his defense. He changes games. In just two years Tubby brought these guys from the doghouse of D-I basketball to a ranked team. They won't be winning any national championships this year, but they sure are fun to watch. Gopher fans have to be excited considering they don't start a senior this year. They will be a pretty salty team next year and should contend for a Big Ten title. I think they'll be up there this year at 3rd-4th in the league, though. Wisconsin and Michigan State should be ahead of the Goofs and I'm surprised Purdue has been struggling so much. It really makes me happy because I've always been a big gopher fan but they have just been horrible lately (plus they've been hard to follow because I don't get the Big Ten network).

Go back to that youtube video and go to about 35 seconds. That is just sick how he makes that look so easy going through his legs. Hopefully this kid has his head on straight and will be a big time player for the goofs.

That's him. He's as quick as any guard in the nation. Still pretty raw as JGII stated, but man is he quick.

Agreed. IMO, him and Ty Lawson from North Carolina are the two quickest players in the country.

Watched Gophers play Penn State Sunday. That Battle is the real deal at this level. He was kind of quiet the first half, but he lit it up the second. Very athletic and quick. Al Nolan stayed with him for the most part. Not a lot else to go with Battle, they have a good lineup, but just not as athletic as the Gophers.

Wow, Gophers were down 10 to the Badgers with just over 3 min left but it looks like the Gophers are going to win in OT

And Nolan fouled out with about 7:00 to go in the game. Wisconsin gave that game away and Westbrook from MN played a phenominal game. Huge shot to tie it at the end of regulation. Iverson and Sampson barely played in this game.

It was amazing to watch Bo Ryan melt down as a call or two finally didn't go his way. It's no wonder they have only lost 3 or 4 home Big 10 home games since that building opened when you see the way he controls the officials.

He is a master when it comes to controlling the officials. What lost him the game was that when Tubby went small (took out Iverson and Sampson and played 3 guards and 2 forwards) Wisconsin didn't have an answer. They looked like they've never seen a press before. The only guy who kept his head for the Badgers was Krabbenhoft. Gotta give it to Tubby. He can coach. So can Bo, though. MN probably has more talent than WI by a long shot, but they were lucky to get the win. He just coaches such a good Defensive and Rebouding strategy.

That was definitely the key. Tubby is a smart guy and he knew his young big guys were not going to be able to out-muscle WI. He went to the smaller, quicker line-up and the Gophers got right back in the game. Granted, it took one heck of a clutch 3 to even get it to OT but WI let them get the shot off and now the Gophers have their first win in WI since 1994.
