  • Western Washington Drops Football

Zimmer also has a blog about it on the Argus Leader website.

I'm sure they have some players that can make the move up to FCS football. It will be interesting to see where their most talented players end up.

How does the NCAA handle transfers from programs that drop out?

D2football's home page has a link to a Seattle paper article about some former players are trying to save or revive the program. Here is the link:

http://www.d2football.com/ Also this article mentions a website devoted to saving the program.

Its a shame to see this happen as they had a great program and our home and home series with them was fun to watch. I remember going to watch the game in Bellingham since I had a few relatives in the area. They played at a city park, and it was not a bad facility, in fact they had grass turf. I believe Coach Stig learned from this trip that was not a good idea to not wait until the last minute to leave SF for the west coast. The Jacks were tired and flat. Even Josh Ranek had an off day. I believe the next year, SDSU took some heat in the Argus for leaving for west Coast on Thursday for Western Oregan. The following year when WWU came to Brookings we took care of them and their guys had to battle a cool crisp fall evening something I dont think they were used to.

I think I read that the rules state that if a school closes out the program the players can petition to play immediately the next season without having to sit out. I believe this happened with Chuch Hohentaner when Yankton College dropped football and he transfered to State as a quarterback in the 70's, But then that was also an NAIA school.

      2008 Regional Rules Seminars
NCAA Division II 4-4 Transfers Outline

      f. Discontinued/nonsponsored sport exception.

      · The student-athlete's original institution dropped the sport from its intercollegiate program (applicable at time of public announcement) or never sponsored the sport on an intercollegiate level while the student was at attendance at that institution, provided the student had never transferred from an institution that sponsored the sport.

I took a look at www.savewwufootball.com. Interesting how there are former players trying to change the tide, but it looks like a uphill battle. My guess is the current players are or have read the NCAA regulations that StrugisJeff cited in the previous post.

There are all sorts of info on this website and apparently some of the alumni are starting to get involved so who knows what will happen.

SDSU got a ton help from the Yankton College closing as I recall. Is that not the year we made the playoffs 1979? Too bad we are not closer to WWU. They might have some individuals that could supplement our program. I wonder if Coach Stig has been in contact?

You would have thought the AD contacted major donors and former players for more funding before making the final desicion.

They are an old normal school so they are probably deep in tradition and don't have a clue about fund raising. Probably too, in the past the state legislature may have helped them out with athletics. Now the legislature might be tight fisted like all the other 49 states. Recession. I cant think of reason for Washington to be different. In fact anything happening at Boeing is bigger than what happens at WWU.
