Look for USF to move up to the NSIC as soon as they kick out Crookston. USF has been taking steps to get up to a higher level of competition for a while now. The only question is, How will they get by with the reduction in football scholarships that the NSIC would force them to do?

Just curious, how many scholarships does USF as a member of NAIA offer? A full ride at USF has to be in the neighborhood of 20k or more. So do you suppose they might have less than 24 right now? I dont have a clue where NAIA data is published, but I believe they have been less stringent in rules and regs than the NCAA, and that in itself might be a reason to stay NAIA. Just my thought on the matter.

This game might be a money game for USF, and I am sure it is a little more guarentee than a bus and motel motel expenses from Sioux Falls to Grand Forks. Carroll their big NAIA rival has taken on some of the BSC members and also Western and Central Wash and been competitive and I wonder maybe that's about where USF is headed. A UND loss might not hurt them in the NAIA ratings.


No doubt Crookston is the weak link in the NCIS. What I am hearing about the Minnesota legislature is that its going to be a belt tightening year, and whether that trickles down to the Athletic budget at Crookston remains to be seen. SWMU was probably very lucky to get that big chunk of cash to build their new football staduim as I would expect to not see many more projects given to the Minnesota schools.

Yes, we are, now that we're out of transition, but we played a few "bunnies" in transition.

USF is apparently a steady NAIA FB national contender, a GREAT GAME for them to test themselves. Little upside for UND other than a home game.

NAIA football is a lot different then D-IAA, if you loose it will hurt you, the teams are spread across the nation and they see a loss as a loss.... I've heard that USF is getting 60grand for the game, if that is true its worth it though..

I don't know about USF moving up, I just ask the question why? they make good money in NAIA, there conference is geographically friendly and they can out spend everybody...

For the same reason, JB, that many NAIA schools have moved to NCAA DII...because if they have a team qualify for national competition, the expenses are paid for by the NCAA. As an NAIA school, USF has had to raise money every year to pay for their football team's travel expenses to the national game.

It was the move from NAIA to NCAA D-II by many schools that watered down D-II and brought about the very problems that eventually drove the bigger schools to consider moving to D-I...reductions on scholarship numbers, coaches, etc.

What comes to my mind, and related somewhat to Coach Meyer at NSU, is Lipscomb which was a big NAIA basketball power and Meyer was part of its success, but they decided to move up to NCAA D1 and Coach Meyer moved on, also another one is Carson Newman, more a football power in now NCAA D2, so you can fine all kinds of schools that are former NAIA members including the now entire NCC league, which goes back to Jack#1Fan's student days. The NCAA came out with the college division which is now D2, and the NAIA membership had to have dropped when that happened. Also historically black colleges were barred from membership until about the 1960's. So in many ways its surprising there still is an NAIA organization, and not surprising that USF had to pay their way to Tennessee for the final game.

Sorry, did not mean to date you. I do remember the NCC moving in mass in 1957 I believe and hardly a word was said by any of the members, in fact most were pleased for men's bb, as it had been a tough road to Kansas City for the big NAIA 64 team tourney. Also USD with the Daniels brother had early success with the new NCAA tourney winning it all in 1958.

I have often wondered if NAIA made money on that tourney? It would probably be still going if they had, but its part of the past. So I think from a money angle NAIA has its challenges.
