  • Chicago State to Great West

Reported by the Associated Press today: Chicago State University has joined the Great West Conference in all sports effective immediately, the Great West announced Wednesday. CSU will compete in the 2008-09 school year in cross country, golf, indoor and outdoor track. The following sports will play a conference schedule in 09-10: men's and women's basketball, volleyball, baseball and women's tennis.

Other schools in the Great West include Houston Baptist, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Texas Pan-American, Utah Valley University, University of South Dakota, and the University of North Dakota.

The list of D1 schools looking for a conference is beginning to grow. It tells me that SDSU needs to continue to build and not go backwards in terms of financial resources and other elements that build a competitive programs in 20 sports. The list ready to replace us is there in the Great West.

I believe Chicago State was in the Summit so they aren't new. There is a lock on teams moving up to the DI ranks for the next few years. USD is part of the last group that moved up(I think). The teams that are joining the Great West are just the Independents that are DI.
I know you aren't getting to SDSU not being competitive in the Summit(to be replaced). We already are fixing up the fields for most sports.
I look at how competitive SDSU's teams already are. We are in the top group in volleyball(in a year with a young team), cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, women's basketball, soccer and golf. I think the addition of SDSU and NDSU instantly makes the Summit a much better conference. I don't follow NDSU's "other sports" real well but I know about their volleyball, cross country and track and field teams. They should be near the top consistently in those sports. I want to see what happens with their Men's basketball team after this year. I don't see them falling off the map but they lose a lot of talent after this year.
I also wonder about SDSU's soccer and men's golf teams after this year. I always worry about a team when they lose 2/3rd's of their starters.

Chicago State was kicked out of the MidCon/Summit league for reasons related to compliance with NCAA rules and regulations. I'm not in favor of inviting them back unless it becomes an absolutely necessary situation, and then, I'm still not sure I favor inviting them back.

I am well aware of this also aware of exactly where Chicago State is located in the Second City. Its unfortunate that the right kind of adminstrators have not found their way to Chicago State.

I am well aware that posters like Nidaros know the recent history as it relates to the MidCon/Summit league and the Gateway/MVFC I posted the info for those less aware of that history.

My reference to awareness was intended for the post made by 91jack, not towards you. Sorry. If I sounded condesending to you and 91jack, I apologize.

I think we can all agree that Chicago State is a former member of the conference now known as the Summit and there were and there may still be problems, mainly with the administrators following the NCAA regs. Also Chicago State is located on the south side near Hyde Park and U of Chicago. The economics of their neighborhood does not bode well for large crowds and even with new facilities. The last time I checked they were drawing 400 to 500 for BB games. Neither the Chicago Sun or the Tribune give them much coverage so they are behind a rock and hard place. I think they would kill for our coverage in the Argus Leader.

Chicago State has an uphill battle to keep their programs alive. Getting back in the Summit is going to be a tough battle for them.
