Interesting buzz in Ames this week about backup quarterback Phil Bates quitting the team, apparently over the decision to make Austen Arnaud the starter. For the first four games of the season, the Cyclones played both Bates and Arnaud but in later games, Arnaud was getting more and more playing time.
The departure of Bates leaves the Cyclones without a backup QB.
Bates is the son of Phil Bates Sr., a Nebraska standout who had a pro career with the Lions. Junior played for Omaha North.
The story is being played out in blogs, message boards etc. as 'just another whiney kid quitting because he's not getting enough playing time' and the dad is pretty upset.
A sports columnist covering ISU and his take on it: link.
Here's a news story from the Des Moines Register with quotes from Senior -- he's upset!! (Probably one of those situations in which an hour later, he wished he had just said 'no comment'.) link.
