  • University of Montana

My wife and I took a vacation to Missoula, MT to visit some friends.

I took some pictures of Montana's Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

The first picture is from Mt. Sentinel (a hill you can climb to the "M".)

The second picture is the entrance to the Stadium.

As you can see, they are in currently putting in new turf and other renovations.

No doubt they have a phenominal facility. The school has had about as many football student athletes break the law as Iowa. I try to ignore and have no respect for the UM Athletic program after they bought out their football game with the Jacks in Brookings after we fullfilled our end of the contract playing two games in Missoula. They have a history of doing this and thus have a hard time finding quality opponents to do a home/home series.

I didn't realize while we were there, the law issues players have had, but believe you me, the buying games out thing was a topic we discussed thoroughly.

While Montana has had their problems with the law I believe its Montana State that is the one demonized in that state for their overall transgressions of the law. That being said I don't pay close enough attention to other state's police blotters to know if they are any worse that any other school or if its the recent problems with Oklahoma transfer JD Quinn that has brought this to the front. I prefer to not worry too much about another schools problems with the law (unless they are a rival) as SDSU will likely have their own problem from time to time (14 lbs of Marijuana anyone?).

While I will always hold a little grudge against Montana for not coming to Brookings I think calling it an unforgivable action is over the top. The administration knew what they were getting into when they scheduled the games that way. They were payed pretty well for Montana not coming and, while I don't know the specifics of the deal, I think travel was also covered for the team's two trips out there. Like Rowdy stated this has been discussed to death and nothing new can come from the discussion again.

Back on topic, Washington Grizz is a beautiful stadium and one of the best game day atmospheres I have ever experienced. If you get a chance and are a fan of FCS football its got to be a destination. I was amazed how different it was from the time SDSU went out there in 1989.

It is Montana State that has had numerous football players in trouble. In fact their coach was fired last summer and replaced by the former head coach at Drake because of all the football players in trouble. They had a couple players involved in cocaine distribution which led to a murder in which a the players were charged with murder. The coach actually pursued a lawsuit against the university for firing him.

Don't think Montana hasn't had some players in trouble because they have, but it seems MSU has had many more problems.

The first of two times I been at Missoula and their football facility was 1988 when the Jacks played. The staduim has come a long ways since that time. I was in Missoula again in 1993 when SDSU nearly won with 36 schollies. I been told that one injury on D in the linebacker corp allowed a comeback. At any rate, I enjoyed my two trips to Missoula. A beautiful place and a growing community. Winning football programs can accompolish what U of M has done with a growing community. I always admired U of Montana and still do although I missed the two more recent games, due to rising gas prices. Can you believe that, as I planned to drive and enjoy myself.

As far as the 2 for 1 and the subsequent buy out, I think SDSU admin learned from their mistakes here. SDSU probably did okay financially on the buyout otherwise, we might have played it. If a good team comes to town such as Georgia Southern and its late in the season and 5000 SDSU fans show up then thats not so good either. Two sides to this story at least from my view.

Players in trouble, I know there was a huge scandal in Bozeman. Some of the bad parts have already been mentioned and its hard to believe former Coach Kramer sued, but then again, I am not his lawyer so hard to say what that is all about. I know if Stig had applied for that job MSU, he would NOW be living in Bozeman. His good friend Dale Lennon did apply and he had the job. Lennon backed away for what ever reasons. Both have high moral expectations, and thats what MSU was looking for after Kramer and they probably got that in the former Drake coach. I am not aware of any subsequent problems at either UM or MSU.

He sued claiming his dismissal was unjustified and deformation of character...that having players getting arrested wasn't his fault. Believe me this happened....it was BIG news out here last summer. I don't know what happened as far as a settlement or if it was eventually dropped or not.

Just makes me feel all that much better about the program Stig runs....having good character is as important to Stig as anything.

                Thanks MontanaRabbit:

I too wonder what the status of the litigation is as of today. I suppose a good lawyer could make some arguements in favor of the coach. When things like this happen it raises a number of questions in terms of responsibilty for actions and the student athletes. When the vast majority are 18 and over they are not minors. Players vs. Coaches is an interesting legal question.

In this case and others, I personally feel the coach has some responsibilty since he places the letter of intent in front of the student athlete, and signs his own name after the student athlete. I have never seen a letter intent form, but I suspect the procedure is on that order. We tend to think the letter of intent is something for publicty on letter signing day, but I think its more, and it's really a one year contract for financial assistance to the student in exchange for athlete participation and representation of the institution.

At any rate, if I were independantly wealthy which I am not, I would be looking into relocating to Western Montana.
