  • FIVE Freshmen to Leave Southern Illinois Women's Basketball

So remember the team that SDSU beat in last years WNIT second round? I remember their coach being crazy then. Apparently, her players also think she's nuts.

Brenna Saline, Ellen Young, Tanaeya Worden, Natalie Taylor and Paris Campbell have all asked for and received their releases. Katrina Swingler, the only remaining true freshman, joins juniors Jasmine Gibson, Erica Smith and Kaci Bailey for 2008-09. The status of Alex Hart, a December transfer, is unknown.

Eikenberg said that recruits Olivia Lett and Eryn Stepherson remain committed for next year, as the Salukis will try to turn around a 10-20 record from this past season.

This season, the former Missouri-Kansas City coach was accused of telling her players she hated them and couldn't wait until the year was over so she didn't have to see their faces anymore. In a letter players sent to the NCAA, players also alleged Eikenberg kicked them out of a team locker room and forced them to put their belongings in trash bags for transportation to a different locker room.
And for all of the debate about SDSU needing to offer long term contracts, this one goes to the side of one-year contracts

The university faces an extensive payout if it chooses to dismiss Eikenberg, according to her contract. SIU would have to pay Eikenberg 100 percent of her annual salary from the time of termination until the end of the contract in 2012, which amounts to more than $500,000. ...

SDSU played the Salukis during the season last year at Frost and played Ill St. in the 2nd round of the WNIT last year. Good find though and good arguement for one-year contracts. Can anyone find out how many states only allow 1-year contracts for their State institutions.

I'm not sold one way or the other, but I know one thing...if we are the only state in the nation or one of two or three that only allows one-year contract, IMO, it needs to be changed.

I don't want this to be just "one more thing" SD is the last in the nation or the only one in the nation to not do.
Seatbelts, teacher pay and going D-1 was enough...it gets embarrassing after a while.

    Go Jacks!!
    SDSU...Passionate, Relentless, Champions.

Thank you, I was beginning to think I was some sort of an old fool for defending single year contracts. SDSU's most successful coaches do have incentives included in each contract, such as $$bonus for conference championships, 20 games won in a basketball season, playoff appearences etc, so not having multi year contracts is not a negative in my opinion. It does not make us hayseeds. It does allow SDSU to operate in a fiscal manner in this period of transition to D1. The five year period relating to non-competition for national titles may be over, but that does not put us financially in the same league of Big 10 or Big 12 schools. We need to improve our salaries etc, but multi year contracts are not answer. Its what we have to offer that is important.

SDSU has not had any trouble filling any vacancy and I dont expect we will. There are coaches always looking for new opportunities.
