    USD wins a good game.
    USD 68, Delta State 58.

USD will now play in its first (and last) DII Championship Game. They'll take on Northern Kentucky on Saturday.

There was one fellow in the USD crowd wearing a red shirt with large letters: Beat State. I had to laugh. I doubt he had a shirt printed just for Delta State (but, maybe he did!).

I saw that shirt too! I feel bad for Coyote fans like that. Perhaps the most important thing that they could learn by watching both xDSU's in the transition to Division I is that there is so much more to look forward to than one or two rivalry games a year. But this isn't a smack thread so I will take this opportunity to congratulate the Coyotes and wish them luck on Saturday.

Congrats to USD. I'd go to their board and say that but all I hear is crickets over there.
Considering they are one of the 4 Dakota flagships their board is amazingly dead for being on the verge of a national championship.

Given who they are, not sure it qualifies as amazing.

Hmmm. Last time that NKU went to the final game they played and lost to another South Dakota school. Who could that have been? Go Jacks. Maybe that guy with the Beat State shirt will be wearing one that says Screw the U sat night.

The crowd for Thursday game was list at 1604 for the game with Delta State. I think it's pathetic fan support for a school that only traveled 4 hours to get there. In St. Joe's, the community adopted the Jackrabbit Nation theme as we brought approximately 3000 SDSU fans to the games.

Personally I think it just highlights one of the more significant challenges USD will face when compared to any of the other three Dakota flagships. They're significantly smaller than UND, NDSU, or SDSU, and I don't perceive that their alumni/fan base is, overall, quite as large as intense as the other three.

This doesn't mean that they're doomed to failure or anything like that, it just means that they'll have to work that much harder to make up the difference.

For the benefit of any USD fans lurking here, here's your fan discussion board:

I'll also take the opportunity to gently remind all to be careful not to let criticism/commentary slide into smack. Most of the commentary here has been criticism/commentary but just reminding folks to keep it at that somewhat higher level. (I know how we all are . . . )

Personally, I recognize and respect the USD women's accomplishments for what they are. They're having success at the level they're at, which is always something to admire. I thought that the Delta State game would be the one to trip them up, after that 2ot Washburn game. I think the DII NC is theirs to lose now.

Agree with Filbert here. As much as I dislike the Coyotes this group of players has earned my respect. They came together from a variety of places and have developed into the best team in the nation. I certainly won't be disappointed if they win it all.

I agree, watched parts of the game last night and they play much the same way as the Jacks. Not as athletic as the teams they are playing against, but play fundamental, work hard, and shoot lights out from beyond the arc.

They earned some respect from me as well.

Congrads to the Coyotes, it will be interesting to see if they can win it all. I dont have a problem if they do.

They need a hugh hurrah before next year and the transition woes.

Watched the game last night and the 'Yotes played very well.

Best of luck to them in the final! It would be the last positive thing that is likely to happen at USD for a while.

I couldn't help but watch the game and try and compare USD's team to SDSU's team this year and when they won it all in the last year in D2.

Sorry, not trying to throw smack here but I just don't see their team as being nearly as talented as either of those SDSU teams. They may be good enough to get it done and win the D2 tournament but both of those SDSU teams would win by 10+ in my opinion.

Tried to take off the yellow and blue glasses when making the comparison. What does everyone else think?

Re: USD Women v. Delta State

What will happen next year (and even moreso the year after when USD plays a full D-I schedule) is to me more interesting than comparing teams that will never play one another.

With that in mind, I looked at the minutes played and scoring statistics for both teams.

USD returns 43.7% of minutes played and 43.3% of scoring for next year. SDSU returns 77.5% of minutes and 83.6% of scoring for next year, if my quickie calculations are correct.

The returning USD players not only have the usual challenge of raising their game from one year to the next that all players face, but will also be playing at least a partial D-I schedule while trying to replace over half of their minutes played and scoring, all the while getting in sync with a new coach.

It will be interesting to see how they do next year.
