  • Scholarships at USD

I was wondering what women's sports USD will pick up to comply with Title 9. Didn't they have to cut their baseball team because they weren't complying? We have Equestrian but I don't see them getting that sport. Do they have soccer? Will they be able to have enough soccer players to make up for the extra scholarships?
I'm just curious because I remember their problems with this and their baseball team.

I figured this up a couple of weeks ago. They will be able to fully fund mbb and fb and have enough women's sports to get by. They do not have baseball or wrestling, so that will help them. They will have approximately 40 fewer athletic scholarships than SDSU currently does when they max out their women's sports. The NCAA will crack down on schools like this who offer the minimum amount of sports.

I might have missed there highly publicized and well documented plan for going DI, but I am curious... Anybody know their timeline for ramping up football schollies?

According to their website, here are the sports they offer:

Men-Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Swimming & Diving, Track & Field.

Women-Basketball, Cross Country, Golf, Soccer, Softball, Swimming & Diving, Tennis, Track & Field, Volleyball.

Five men's sports and nine women's sports so they should be OK with Title IX.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there needs to be just as many schollies for women as men?? I don't think it matters how many sports for each as long as there are as many schollies for women as men.

If this is the correct assumption, then we need to find out how many schollies each sport has and if those are even, they should be OK. This is why fooball(with 63 schollies/85 fbs) kills sports like baseball and wrestling in regards to Title IX at D-1 schools. Hence, Equestrian at SDSU to save wrestling and baseball.

            Go Jacks!!

Basically, they have volleyball, soccer, tennis and softball to offset the number of schollies for football. I am assuming that the other redundant sports would nearly equal schollies for both men and women. I guess that is what I was looking at. I am not sure of the acutal numbers of schollies, but did not mean to mislead about the number of sports offered.

You are correct propar80...scholarships have to be equivalent on both sides of the gender line but so do roster spots.

I was not aware that the roster spots had to be equal. I knew the schollies needed to balance.

Thanks guys! I was too lazy to see what sports they have. I just assumed that they'd have to add sports. I didn't think about just adding scholarships to each sport they have.

I don't know the letter of the rule but there is something involved with roster spots. It's the reason there are only a max of 95 players allowed to participate in fall camp. After fall camp more can be added, that is why there are prefferred walk ons and others that are invited to walk on after school starts.

OK..... first of all its pretty much like you said but I believe there is a formula to figure it out based on % of gender that are students at your school. I know at BHSU we have over 60% females so we have to offer more womens sports then mens and we underfund the mens sports and max fund the womens sports.... Its confusing to say the least.... I think USD will be fine with IX the only problem I see is with out adding wrestling and baseball they are going to have problems with attracting a conference to get them. I know SDSU has just about every sport so conferences liked that. They won't like a school that doesn't have baseball and doesn't have wrestling and with out doing something they won't be able to add them any time soon.

                          Re: Scholarships at USD

From pure memory and am not going to take the time to look it up.
I believe there are three different tests that can be used to determine if you are in compliance and don't recall exactly what each test is. SD Board of Regents has set the policy that all SD colleges/universities must meet all three tests. In almost every case, this means meet the test generally considered the most stringent. I don't think this will be an issue for USD at all, because the rules really don't change, just the numbers move up because more scholarships, roster spots, etc. are available at D-1 than at D-2. Additionally, given the past problems that have been documented elsewhere, USD will not get caught in that mess again.

                            Re: Scholarships at USD

SDSU doesn't have mens soccer for sports in the Summit League. That would mean that USD wouldn't have baseball and men's soccer. Wrestling is in a different conference so that wouldn't apply. I know we are talking about other conferences to but some of them don't have all of the sports. That will be a factor though.

Not sure exactly what you mean by conference affiliation being a factor. The Title IX requirements are applied to each institution and conference affiliation wouldn't affect that outcome. Conference affiliation would affect what sports the institution would offer, is that what you meant?
