  • Will anyone coach Michigan?

Sure, someone will coach Michigan. But, another party on the short list, Schiano from Rutgers, has removed his name from consideration.

    ESPN story:
    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3145205

Who wants to go to Michigan? No doubt many do, but is Michigan going to have trouble getting the absolute top-tier coach the program deserves? Lloyd Carr wasn't paid as well as coaches at schools with less tradition than Michigan...I wonder if Michigan is having trouble luring away great coaches from other programs because the other programs can win a war of dollars. I suppose Michigan alums are weighing in both with opinions and dollars (to the right candidate).

    Any predictions?

Interesting to see. WNAX was mentioning that Tom Osborne made $138,000 is last year coaching NU. Got a $50,000 bonus for the N.C. and gave it to his assistance. In 1999 5 coaches made more than $1,000,000 now 54 coaches do.

Meeeechegan will get somebody, probably Kelly from Cincy or Grobe from Wake Forest, but they are going to have to face facts......To get a coach who can keep them in the National title chase every year (which is where they think they rightfully belong), they are going to have to pony up the benjamins!

That might be what happened with guy from Rutgers. They feel that the prestige is enough to compensate for not paying as much. Whatever happened, there interest got both Miles and Rutgers coach contract extensions.

I'll bet the workload is about the same as any of those programs so, take the money and perhaps have a tiny bit less alumni pressure...stay at Rutgers.

I'm betting the Cincy coach will get a look.

Trust me, won't happen at all. They won't go after a guy that Michigan State turned away, and there was a transfer situation (not allowing a kid from Detroit to leave Cincy for MSU) that has left Kelly's name as mud in the Detroit Public League.

I've heard some of the dirt on the Miles situation, but I won't post it here (it's that juicy). PM me if you want to know.

Site with compilation of recent articles expressing concern over Michigan's search for a new head coach...is it getting embarrassing yet?

I think it's a fascinating story. I have some good friends who are Michigan grads and they are darned serious about this and getting impatient about there having been no announcement of a first-class coach for the team.

I was just talking to friend about this situation today. The fact that they can't get a good candidate makes you wonder what is going on at U-M. This is starting to look like the Nebraska debacle when they hired Callahan. I am not equating the two schools and think Martin is a better AD than Peterson, but there must be a reason no one is rising to the top.

Could this be one of those situations where you don't want to be the guy following Carr, but you definately want to be the guy following the guy after Carr. Would you really want to step into into the current situation when Carr has been good, but just not good enough. Seems like a no-win situation for whomever it is. The next guy in however could be the "savior" if things don't go so well.

                      Re: Will anyone coach Michigan?

Kirk Ferentz is apparently on their list.

But I'm still betting on Les Miles. Note that he hasn't yet signed the contract extension he agreed to with LSU. The reason: Both sides claim they don't have time. What's it take to sign a contract that you've already agreed to? About 90 seconds. He's not going to sign that contract, and after LSU wins the title game, everything gets thrown up in the air again.

Look for Michigan to lock up Miles after the title game, or to go after Ferentz. If they're going after Kirk, they must be willing to pay big bucks. Ferentz makes $2.4 million now.
                      Holy nutmeg!

I'm in this camp with you JimmyJack. If he's LSU's guy he'd be signed already. Obviously that's not the case.

I'm a Hawkeye guy and would hate to see Ferentz go, but if that's the case, so be it. There's got to be someone good that could take over the Iowa program and get some results. Ferentz has been good and had some tough seasons with injuries that have hurt him.

He signed last Thursday a new deal that will keep him there through 2012.

Like I said, Miles is locked into LSU, so who really wants the Michigan job?

OK, back to Ferentz. Michigan's President, Mary Sue Coleman, was president at Iowa when Ferentz was hired. Ferentz has a daughter attending Michigan. And he was born there.

The big thing, though, is President Coleman. She was a huge Ferentz backer when at Iowa, and it isn't out of the question to imagine that the president of Michigan might get involved in hiring a football coach.

The other name out there is Brian Kelly from Cincinnati, former Central Michigan and Grand Valley State coach.
