I'll bet ESPN will be very careful on this story and at the same time, very aggressive: if they can be the first to announce Miles is walking from LSU to go to Michigan, ESPN will make a lot of noise. Miles was a little tough on ESPN and I thought made ESPN look a little bad when Miles indicated he was staying at LSU.

ESPN will be making a list of reliable sources, checking it twice, gonna find out if Miles is naughty or nice. If Miles goes to Michigan: A lump of coal in the Christmas stocking of coach Miles for jerking around LSU recruits!

When Kirk Herbstreit from ESPN (sp?) issued his explanation for "falsely" reporting that Miles was going to Michigan he said that his source was very reliable and that he was suprised that Miles wasn't announcing the same. He didn't say he was wrong, just suprised. I think Miles is going to be Michigans next coach.

Just heard "The Duke" on ESPN radio update: Detroit Free News reports Miles contract extension with LSU has an out for Michigan and that Miles is talking with the AD.

If Miles signed his extension on December 5th, and then turned around after the National Championship game to go to Michigan he would have to go down as the biggest (insert seven letter word that rhymes with BassPole here) in the modern coaching ranks. I know coaches are often times looking out for their own interests, but that would be a bit over the top. There are High School players right now who have committed to LSU based on Miles signing that extension. Granted, they don't officially sign until February...oh, screw it. This will turn into a discussion that I don't want to continue.

Based on JimmyJack's info, Ferentz has to be a front runner. Could Brian Kelly go from DII Grand Valley St to the Big House in just four years? Crazier things have happened.

Makes me happy we're at a place where the coach's character matters so much. I wouldn't really want to be someplace that lured one of these dollar-chasers to be the coach. It would be tough to root for somebody like that.

I agree with you on the fishing rod aspect, but two things I remember about the Miles deal that may come back to change things allowing everyone to save face:
1. Apparently no new money in the deal (old ESPN report that I can't find link for) and
2. LSU gave permission for MI to talk to him after the championship game.

I, like most everyone else, thought that #2 meant the SEC championship game because permission was given before WV and MO lost. If it meant nat'l championship, MI won't get the chance to up the ante for awhile. Then LSU says they did everything possible to keep him, but they aren't going to stand between a man and his dream, blah, blah, blah, and the end result:

Kids who signed because of who recruited them look at being penalized for lack of commitment by the adults involved.

Not having been in the position of those coaches, I can only hope that I would act like I type today.


EDIT: As for Ferentz, how much will it cost MI to get him knowing that IA will likely ask for a chance to match?

Going from LSU to Michigan seems like a lateral move. If you're the AD at Michigan, you're definately thinking about your own hide when picking a coach. A Big Name coach is always a safe bet, even if he isn't the best coach, your seat doesn't get to warm for a while. Hiring a coach from a less prestigious program makes your seat a bit toasty, but often is a good option in the long term - if you pick the right coach.

While I am not really disagreeing, but do we really believe that any big time coach is locked into any job? I don't think I need to list examples, but buyout clauses are routine and without know what the terms are, and how willing LSU is try and enforce it, Miles may still be available.

Cincy's Kelly is the stealth candidate -- not many talking him up but some insiders think he's on the medium-length (not the short-) list.

OK, back to Ferentz. Michigan's President, Mary Sue Coleman, was president at Iowa when Ferentz was hired. Ferentz has a daughter attending Michigan. And he was born there.

The big thing, though, is President Coleman. She was a huge Ferentz backer when at Iowa, and it isn't out of the question to imagine that the president of Michigan might get involved in hiring a football coach.

The other name out there is Brian Kelly from Cincinnati, former Central Michigan and Grand Valley State coach.

What's it take to sign a contract that you've already agreed to? About 90 seconds. He's not going to sign that contract, and after LSU wins the title game, everything gets thrown up in the air again.

Look for Michigan to lock up Miles after the title game, or to go after Ferentz. If they're going after Kirk, they must be willing to pay big bucks. Ferentz makes $2.4 million now.

He signed last Thursday a new deal that will keep him there through 2012.

I'm in this camp with you JimmyJack. If he's LSU's guy he'd be signed already. Obviously that's not the case.

I'm a Hawkeye guy and would hate to see Ferentz go, but if that's the case, so be it. There's got to be someone good that could take over the Iowa program and get some results. Ferentz has been good and had some tough seasons with injuries that have hurt him.
