  • Kansas State Basketball

I'm going to watch Kansas State's men's basketball team with interest this year. Former Jackrabbit Andre Gilbert is on the roster and I hope he has a great year.

Here's an ESPN columnist's view on the upcoming Kansas State season. KSU managed to hold the talented recruits brought in by Bob Huggins during his one-year at the helm (Huggins left for West Virginia).

Yeah, best of luck to Gilbert, it will be fun to watch his stats stack up......if only it could've been here...

Andre has scored 14 points, had 9 assists, 7 turnovers, and 4 steals while averaging 23 minutes a game in an exhibition win over Fort Hays State, and wins over Sac. State and Pittsburgh State. Continued success to Andre.

Maybe our recruiting hasn't been as bad as people have said the last couple of years considering two of our recruits are now playing for BCS colleges. Player retention of those recruits on the other hand....

Well, player retention certainly wasn't something the program had much control over. Steve was a GREAT recruit and we knew it at the time. If the ACL hadn't popped and he had to sit out the year, and finally (because they certainly knew about him) the home Illini hadn't welcomed him, I think he would have helped us tremendously.

And certainly the problem over Andre wasn't controllable...and although I think he got a raw deal personally by the way that drama played out, you couldn't blame him for going elsewhere. And we knew he was a great recruit.

There was no doubt that we recruited alright, but transition and road games can be hell.

            Gilbert Upstages Beasley

Andre Gilbert, getting the headlines today in his 22-pt contribution to Kansas State's win over Rider today. Here's the start to the AP story found on ESPN.com:

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) -- Kansas State's junior college transfer upstaged its top recruit on Sunday.
Andre Gilbert interrupted the Michael Beasley show by scoring 22 points, going 4-for-6 from 3-point range, and the Wildcats (No. 20 ESPN/USA Today, No. 18 AP) held off Rider 82-69 in the Old Spice Classic. Beasley had 13 points and 10 rebounds after scoring at least 30 points in four of K-State's previous five games.

Beasley, a consensus top-five recruit, is expected to have games like that. Gilbert, a community college transfer from Mount San Jacinto, is not.

It didn't surprise Wildcats coach Frank Martin, who made Gilbert one of his first signings after taking over when Bob Huggins abruptly resigned. Even though Martin couldn't recall exactly where Gilbert came from -- California, after a year at South Dakota State.

"He had 20 points at Rupp Arena against Kentucky, when he was at North Dakota State or South Dakota or wherever the heck he was at -- South Dakota State," Martin said. "You don't score 20 points at Rupp Arena unless you have some ability to put the ball in the basket."

This is really funny. Someone (the coach or Andre) have their facts really messed up. It wasn't Andre that had 20+ points when we played Kentucky at Rupp Arena...it was Ben Baren. Check out the box score here:

Good catch, Btown. Big Ben Beran was the man at that game.

Coach Martin at KSU is befuddled. I think I'll send him an e-mail.

Good idea JackJD...in the meantime though, his quote is partially correct "you don't score 20 points in Rupp Arena without being able to put the ball in the hole". Exactly what Ben Beran is capable of doing!! We were there that night, and a couple from Kentucky asked us if we could leave Beran with them when we left. Great to have Ben back!

Unfortunately when Steve Holdren did the same thing at Illinois for us...tore them up...several days later...might be what caused Steve to head back that way. Thank goodness, Kentucky didn't get Big Ben from us!

Beran scored 25 against Kentucky; Gilbert's SDSU high was 17 against Manhattan.

Andre scored 6 at the Kentucky game.

The coach was obviously very excited and didn't gather his thoughts well after Andre's 22 pt effot. Keep in mind Coach Martin is new to K-State. Huggins took off in a hurry to head back to his home state of Virginia to take over the West Virginia team. Martin recruited Andre.

The finish to the game was disappointing for Andre, but he played well.
