Appalachian STate 34, Michigan 32
Here's the AP story:
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- What was supposed to be a tuneup turned into a stunner: Appalachian State 34, No. 5 Michigan 32. Julian Rauch's 24-yard field goal with 26 seconds put Appalachian State ahead of Michigan and Corey Lynch's blocked field goal in the final seconds sealed one of college football's biggest upsets.
Here's the lead from ESPN.com (the obvious attitude of the writer is why its so satisfying when yet another BCS team falls to a FCS team just like it happens several times a year):
"I-A teams schedule I-AA teams for laughers, but Appalachian State is doing the chuckling Saturday. The two-time defending I-AA champs stunned No. 5 Michigan 34-32 in the Big House...."
I doubt the Michigan coaches thought they scheduled Appy for laughs. I'll bet the Michigan coaches, if asked, would say Appy State was better than many in Michigan's conference. They knew they'd run into a tough opponent. No doubt they had to be somewhat confident but laugh? Nah. Oh well, I guess its a cute lead-in to the story.
