    Cleaning House

I saw Craig Smith was fired today from Utah and Saul Phillips was let go at Northern the other day.

Utah has fired men's basketball coach Craig Smith, who has a 65-62 record in nearly four seasons but no NCAA tournament appearances.

I get it with Saul - bad season last year and only two wins this season. Saw a video of him from the weekend's games and he looks terrible. I don't get Smith. Picked last in the Big XII, and is currently in the middle of the pack. And just beat Kansas and K State.

I saw some speculation on Twitter that Calhoun may be in line for a move up from Utah State. Would they hire Smith back ?

from Goodman, " [news about the firing] Strange timing. Utah is 7-9 in the Big 12."

from Matt Mooney, "I don’t understand this. I’ve played for over 20 different coaches in my career now and Coach Smith is at the top of the list. They were picked dead last in the Big 12 and they’re middle of the pack. Overachieving imo. I feel bad for the players and everyone involved that they can’t even finish the season."

A guy who tweets about basketball (and sometimes the M & W teams) had this to say "I hate these in season firings. Let the season play out. Unnecessarily nasty. Barring no off court issues why is this becoming more common? I don't buy the "head start" on a search."

George Washington's women's team also fired their HC today.

Also this Utah thing is worth keeping an eye on since I would assume Hendo would be thrown into the mix (since we can assume he was in the mix at places like WSU, USU). This is from Jeff Borzello today in an article about upcoming coaching carousel

"Utah made the surprising move to fire Craig Smith on Monday, just one week after the Utes beat Kansas and Kansas State in back-to-back games. But Smith has gone to zero NCAA tournaments during his four seasons at Utah, and while the timing was strange, Smith was clearly on the hot seat entering the season. It's too early to really dive into names, but UC San Diego's Eric Olen, Colorado State's Niko Medved, South Dakota State's Eric Henderson, Boise State's Leon Rice and UC Irvine's Russell Turner could get a look. NBA assistants Alex Jensen (Dallas Mavericks) and Johnnie Bryant (Cleveland Cavaliers) were linked to the job when Smith was hired. It seems unlikely the Utes would go down the Utah State route again and pursue current Aggies head coach Jerrod Calhoun."

I would be shocked if any coach went Summit to Big 12. I think Hendo will have to go MWC or MVC first.
