This maybe old news to some and was released in June but worth giving the Wolves their props. Hey I remember in early 80's they drew very well at the old Abreedeen area (fans were right on the floor)
NORTHERN STATE MEN ’S BASKETBALL NO.1 IN NCAA DII HOME ATTENDANCE
INDIANAPOLIS,Ind.- The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)has announced the men ’s basketball attendance figures for the 2005-06 season.Northern State University claimed their first Division II attendance crown after just missing the title last year.The Wolves averaged 3,916 over 18 home games.The 70,499 overall fans measured over 20,000 more than any other DII institution while their 3,916 average was nearly 400 more than second place Winston- Salem ’s 3,529.
Northern State has been ranked in the top ten in the nation for attendance the last nine straight years.This marks the seventh time in the last 13 years that the Wolves have been ranked in the top five in the nation in attendance, with second
place finishes coming in 1997-98 and 2004-05. “This proves what Wolves basketball has known for years, that Northern State basketball fans are the best in all of NCAA DII. This gives us a lot to shoot for next season in supporting a young team still in its formative stages.I believe the NCAA Tournament committee will take a long,hard look at Aberdeen to host a national tournament in the future,”commented Northern State Head Men ’s Basketball Coach Don Meyer. Northern State men ’s basketball finished off one of their most successful seasons in the past decade as they posted a 27-6 record after advancing to the NCAA North Central Region Championship game.The 27 wins mark the most for Meyer since coming to NSU in 1999-00 and the most for the program since the 1996-97 season when the Wolves went 30-6.Of the Wolves six losses this season,four were to eventual NCAA DII National Champions of Winona State,who advanced to the Elite Eight after defeating the Wolves 96-86 in the regional finals.The Wolves other two losses were by six points or less.
The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference finished fourth in the nation in average attendance as they had 1,419 fans per event,up 218 from last season.The North Central Conference led DII with 1,920 fans per event. Northern State University (located in Aberdeen,SD) is an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
