  • SIU-E (Probably) to D-1

The chancellor wants it, although response in the student paper was less than enthusiastic. Think the radio said that decision would be made in March. Local NPR station (UMSL) made it sound like a slam dunk.

I took a local government law course over there in 1993 and didn't provide proof I was 21. (I'm now 61).

They sent me a letter stating that I could not be re-admitted until I supplied them with a birth certificate. Wonder if they'd let me in for a game.

BTW-- I just made a quick check on the Post Dispatch's web page and couldn't find this. This will show you that people who complain about the Argus ignoring SDSU don't know what it's like to be a small player in a large media market. If they get in the Valley they might get some mention.

The only Valley conference they're likely to get into in the foreseeable future is the Ohio, not the Missouri.

They along with Utah Valley State might make nice additions to the Mid-Con, if the Mid-Con wanted to exp. to 12. Could be bad news for USD and UND.

I know there's much hate towards the uxd's but from here (St. Louis), USD and UND (especially) look like the stronger names.   SIU-E is a pretty marginal program.  On the other hand it would be the second d-1 program in a metro area with 2.8 million people so maybe....

Since UMKC is in play, I wonder if this will get UMSL thinking D1 as well. Both campuses compete for students but SIU-E has more $$$. Both SIUE and UMSL are largely commuter campuses so I still think the uxd's would trump except for travel costs.

With SIU-E and UVSC you add an Eastern school and a Western School.  There is talk that UVSC is going to add football so if they did you add a football school and a non-football school.  Perhaps by adding UVSC you shore up SUU to maintian you core membership, and finally you are adding St. Louis and Provo/Salt Lake City.

With all that said I haven't really seen anything that makes me think that the Mid-Con is even interested in adding 2 schools and going to an East and West Division format, but it is something to think about (especially if you are on the outside looking in).

No matter how you slice it if SIU-E does go D-I it will add to the list of Independents looking for a conference home.

This Post Dispatch link will probably get truncated.

"Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has decided to go for it.

After more than 15 months of deliberation and study, Chancellor Vaughn Vandegrift told the university's Board of Trustees today that he was recommending that the school move up a notch to NCAA Division I athletics.

But it's far from a done deal. The board must vote on the move and is expected to do so at its March 1 meeting.

If all goes as hoped, the transition would take about 5 years -- and would come with an estimated cost of $2 million a year in operational costs and a corresponding increase in student fees. That doesn't include possible facility upgrades such as building new multi-purpose arenas, which are estimated to cost between $40 and $70 million. "

SIU-Edwardsville looks to move athletics to Division I
                  Associated Press

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University campus in this St. Louis suburb asked the university system's board for its blessing Thursday to have its athletics program step up to NCAA Division I, ending its four-decade run in Division II.

Vaughn Vandegrift, chancellor of the roughly 13,000-student school, presented the proposal to the SIU Board of Trustees, which will vote on the matter during its next meeting March 1.

If endorsed by the board, the reclassification process would take five years, during which time the school's chores would include seeking a conference affiliation and raising funds to cover the larger budget for staffing, recruiting and facilities.

"The Cougars have been highly successful for many years as a Division II program," Vandegrift said in a statement. "And, with board approval, we will continue to perform at a high level against Division I teams." . . . (read more)

(EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.) After nearly 40 years of a storied intercollegiate athletics program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, the Cougars are a step closer to applying for reclassification to NCAA Division I status for all sports in the SIUE program.

SIUE Chancellor Vaughn Vandegrift presented his recommendation today to the SIU Board of Trustees to move the Intercollegiate Athletics program from Division II to Division I. The board will vote on the recommendation at its next meeting March 1. “The Cougars have been highly successful for many years as a Division II program,” Vandegrift said. “And, with Board approval, we will continue to perform at a high level against Division I teams.”

He pointed out that SIUE—as the only metropolitan university in Southern Illinois—has been nationally recognized for the excellence of its academic programs. “We will continue our level of excellence in academics, and with this move will provide even more points of excellence for our students.”

More info. USI-Edwardsville does not have a football team, but otherwise sponsors similar sports as SDSU. They are a DII powerhouse in soccer and tennis.
