Question: Ring the bells????

Attended the opening game at Lindenwood-- which is a good thing, 'cause they usually win their first game and lose the rest of the year. Sat on the visitors side and the Central Oklahoma fans brought cowbells, which were rung incessantly. Thought noise makers like cowbells were verboten.

Are bells--
1. Illegal by the NCAA-- and I was sitting with a bunch of scofflaws?
2. Illegal in D1, but not D2?
3. Illegal in the MVFC but not the MIAA?

I was at SDSU during the darkest days of the Ginn era, and loved my first visit to campus for a game in fifty years. I did miss the bells, however. After all, that's the school song.

This is what I recall. The admin seems to encourage noise with scoreboard on third down, but not with cowbells. If unknowing alums show up with cowbells, I suspect they are confinscated. However, I recall some fans from an opposing team using them during a game. So thumper 76 is right, other teams do it.

*not legal during gameplay. That's how the rules read the last time I went through them.

a. Noisemakers. Artificial noisemakers shall not be permitted to be brought into or used in Valley football stadiums. Member institutions shall not distribute or sell any item(s) that may be used as artificial noisemakers. The intent of the rule is to prohibit activities that disrupt play or create unfair advantage. Thunder sticks, cow bells and horns fall into those categories. Non-prohibited activities include the following:
(1) Putting “make noise” on the video board
(2) Shaking keys on kick offs
(3) Drum cadence prior to and during a kickoff that is non-disruptive.

What about phones?

Talking with another student, he thought about creating a cowbell app. I later looked and found a few different ones that already exist. Surely they can't tell everyone to put their phones away if 15,000 people are using a cowbell app, right?

You mean you can fire off a cannon after a touchdown is scored.That's OK.But don't even try and ring a bell.Struggling to find the logic buried in that,if excessive noise is what they want to avoid.I'm assuming here we can't ring a bell at any time during the game,even during non-play periods,like after touchdowns.

Ok...i kind of know what the difference is CONTROL.It's easy to control one cannon,much harder to control 15,000 people using cowbells.I get it.

Next they'll demand complete silence like they do for golf.Contrast football and basketball,where they do everything possible to distract a free throw shooter,especially at crucial times.This rule probably came about due to some lame coach who doesn't want to admit his team got beat by a better team.Noise,tradition.fanfare,excitement used to be the calling card to people who wanted to get out and watch sports,especially football....what happened?

PS...I do admit,I can't stand those things they use during soccer games....that particular sound is very annoying to me.Try and get soccer fans to teave them at home,they can't and they know it.Soccer fans are known to be rowdy anyway.

They d*** sure can't confiscate peoples phones .Highly unlikely they'd make a team forfeit a game they've won either.

The University of Maryland now prohibits carrying any type of bag,even a purse, into a stadium,arena,that you clearly cannot see it's contents thru the bag,they must be transparent so they can be visually inspected(NFL rule).That's coming next I'd wager.I can kind of see this logic though for a tactic to defeat carrying in a bomb ,or gun,concealed in a package ,bag.etc.These are different times we live in.

In addition to the NFL, the Final Four had this rule in place in Houston. Security is the biggest issue. This will be the new norm. The innovative will manufacture designer see through bags.

The Security guy told us the first game that we couldn't bring our bookbag in for the first game. we explained that we use it as a diaper bag, and it has diapers for a 2 year old still potty training and extra clothes etc. no way I am going to carry those things in my pockets or just carry them loose. My guess is they are more focused on people bringing alcohol in for the college games, but when you have a 2 and 5 year old that's probably not an issue. Hasn't been a problem for us. We even bring in our own water, one game they wouldn't let us, turns out that game if you remember a few years ago they ran out of bottled water. having a bottle or sippy cup is much easier for toddlers then a drinking fountain. Since then if they ask we said it was for the kids considering they have ran out of bottled water before. Probably taking advantage of it. How ever though it would be nice not to have to carry all that stuff in anyway since it takes up the little leg room we do have. We still buy food and snacks etc at the game, just bringing in water for kids we figure they aren't going to crack down on too much. or we just dump out the water and fill them when we get in the stadium if they really start to raise a fuss about it.

You probably have it copied to notebook and saved in your documents folder....so when you have to use it again,all you have to do is go to the file,open it ,copy and paste it to your post.Keep saving it...it'll all be forgotten again by the time next year rolls around.
