What exactly does playing under protest mean?

Playing not very hard,not having much spirit,determination,just going through the motions,etc.....until things change??

To me it's just a token statement of displeasure , to draw attention to their situation. Airing a grievance out publicly as a protest against a perceived injustice. That's all it is I think,correct me if I'm wrong.
