Jim Harbaugh's spring southern camp tour is going to have ripple effects on Jackrabbit recruiting in Chicago. Huh?
The NCAA announced a new rule today that changes how universities can have camp used for recruiting. The media is calling it the Harbaugh rule, because of the University of Michigan's southern tour into SEC territory. However, it also prohibits 'mid-majors' from attending camps in other communities.
24/7 Sports reported today about the rule and had this to say: The new ruling basically says mid-major programs aren't allowed to participate in camps not held on campus. For instance, MAC schools flock to Big Ten camps as say an Ohio State camp generally only has a handful of kids good enough to play for the Buckeyes but several that could play for Ball State, Kent State, Toledo or Western Michigan.
They also included a tweet from Pat Fitzgerald (below), coach of Northwestern that shows the impact on other colleges and the opportunities that kids were able to get last year based off of the exposure to their camp. You will notice that SDSU was one of 112 colleges that had coaches at their Chicago area camp last year. We've made so many great connections in Chicago and their are few opportunities to get so many athletes in one place at one time.
