    Re: USD loses 2 players

Sign that guy up for a multi-year Contract! While I know there are always 2 sides to the story I find his story compelling and hard to believe it is fabricated.

The primary writer is the Volante Editor. At the end of the story it is noted the Sports Editor contributed. They did some first-class reporting by presenting McClelland's side of the story.

Hard to quote the administration if they aren't talking.

In such situations, the administration probably can't say much without looking bad so sometimes it's prudent to ride it out. In the big scope of things, it isn't a huge story and will leave the news cycle in a day or two.

Or they want to take the high road and not make Shy look bad.

I seem to be the only one that isnt buying all that McClellan is selling. I find it hard to believe Smith would suspend him just for looking at other colleges.

Have to agree with you there. There are 2 sides to every story and since everything happened today emotions still might've been running high when he made his statements

well someone in position should say something to clarify what happened. as is, say the u is fighting another school for a recruit who also has love of family first and expresses it to the coaches of both and the u coach says that they agree totally, family first. whats not to say the other teams coach comes out with this article for the recruit to read.

This was my thought. If there is more to the story I would say now is the time to say something for this reason. You can set the record straight and still take the high road.

If his grandmother's condition is true, I think we can certainly sympathize with the player's situation. However, I'm not sure he should be given a pat on the back for reaching out to other schools regarding a possible transfer behind his coaches back. How can a player be 100% focused and "all in" for gametime and his teammates when he's actively engaged with other suitors? I almost find myself backing the decision of the coach to suspend him.

I dunno. Tough situation. My $0.02.

In order for him to contact another school about transferring he would have needed a "written permission to contact" from the current school. So if he was truly looking at transferring and "contacting" other schools he would not have been doing it behind their back.

There are many assumptions that the original suspension was due to McClelland scouting other schools. That may be the red herring that Shy is pushing as the situation elevated. Smith has refrained from doing a public relation dual. The situation may originally have been another team problem that pushed McClelland to consider other basketball options to find a team he could "coach". Meanwhile, we can keep guessing and looking at procedures for each situation. Bottom line is that the young man will move on from Vermillion which is his decision to enact.

As a coach this is my opinion. There is more to the story, probably from both sides. Wouldn't be shocked if everything McClelland is saying is true, but I'm willing to bet there is more to the story.

My guess is there has been some term oil for a while and McClelland looking at other schools (for whatever reason) was the last straw.

are term oil, anything like term papers? Or is that like the ND oil lingo?

Or if he or someone representing him was doing it behind their back it would be ethically proper for the program or programs contacted to make USD aware.

Not saying this is what happened but someone is telling me this is what happened.

Either way, Smith runs the program and its his call, every time, all the time. You can't let a player or even several break major rules like this and not have major consequences. I feel bad for Shy and his situation but support Coach Smith 100% based on what I know. SDSU certainly has had some interesting departures from the basketball program since the DI transition and so has EVERY OTHER program in the nation. This is not a big deal.
