  • New Basketball Rules

It was announced today on the men's side that the shot clock will be set to 30 seconds and that if teams call a timeout within 30 seconds of a media timeout, that timeout will be used as the scheduled break. Another big rule change will come on the women's side with them going to four 10 minutes quarters.

I'm a fan of the 30 second shot clock, not so much of the four 10 minute quarters....

Agree on the four 10 minute quarters. Not a fan of that at all...

I love the 30 second shot clock rule. What will NDSU do now that they can't take the air air out of the ball for 30+ seconds a possession?

People act like this is the only way we play. We've won with multiple cores that played vastly different styles. Talent/depth has always driven our style of play.

The shot clock change for us is rather meaningless.

I vaguely recall when the men went from 4 ten minute quarters to two 20 minute halves. I think it was about 1955, and for the women to go back to quarters is a novel twist. Of course women bb was not in existence back then, and adopted the half system when they came into being.

This is one time I am with Fargo Bison, the Bison have a well coached basketball team. Next year it will be tooth and Nail all the way.

I am surprised by the 4 - 10 minute quarters rule. What are the arguments for that change? I am not seeing the big benefit.

I have no doubt in my mind that the bison will be able to play just fine with the 30 second shot clock. I was just poking a little fun at our friends up north.

The oversight committee thinks it will enhance the flow of the game. Teams will reach the bonus and shoot 2 free throws after reaching 5 team fouls in each quarter.

One advantage is there will be 2 less media timeouts,i guess. Other than that, i don't see much reason for the change.

Not really when you consider that there will be 3 stoppages at the end of quarters also...

I think jack power is right. Instead of having 8 media timeouts, they will be 4 media timeouts and 2 quarter breaks. That would be the 2 less media timeouts that he was talking about. You already had the stoppages at halftime and the end of the game so you can't count those two. So there is really only 2 new stoppages at the end of quarters (the 1st and 3rd quarters). Plus, if a team calls a timeout before the 5-minute mark, that will count as the media timeout so maybe we will only have 2 or 3 media timeouts instead of 4.

Good point. My preference would have been to keep the 20 min halves and knock off a media timeout each half. Also reduce team timeouts from 5 to 4 per game.
