UNLV to play at the Pentagon

Per Stu Whitney: USD will play UNLV in men's basketball at Sanford Pentagon on Dec. 13, 2014. Coyotes will travel to play Rebels on the road Dec. 22, 2015. Memphis and Wichita State will also be playing a game at the Pentagon this coming season.

Nice, good get for them. It would be huge to get this kind of game for the opener in their new arena when its done. Didn't Ryan Miller end up at UNLV?

We will hear the howling in Brookings if the yotes get this kind of game to open the new facility in Vermillion.

Probably a better chance to open the new facility against the school for the blind, then a big name team just because its hard to get um to come, unless they can sweeten the deal somehow.

It is quite likely there is significant sweetener for the game at the Pentagon.

The only way SDSU or USD get's this kind of game will be at a neutral site like the Pentagon or new Event Center in Sioux Falls where the game is heavily subsidized by Sanford or First Premier. Those kind of teams are not going to go into Frost.

It is quite likely there is significant sweetener for the game at the Pentagon.

I would guess $300,000 plus. I suspect USD is getting closer to $25K. Would be fun to watch the Jackrabbits against a major conference DI team in SD.

I think that's a close estimate. Wisconsin received $260,000 last season.

Wisconsin gave up a home game to play at the Pentagon. UNLV is getting a return home game against USD in 2015. I am guessing the payment is closer to $100,000.

Sanford built that place too small. Capacity is 3,250, something like that. Augie and USF can host bigger crowds than that. No big-time team is ever going to play there without a heavy subsidy from Sanford or the host school.

Its primary tenant is the Skyforce. Capacity for the venue is perfect. It isn't meant to seat more...that's what the Premiere Center is for.

Your missing the point. It was built to be a boutique and intimate venue. It's perfect for what they are targeting and is gaining a national reputation for its creative retro 50's look with modern amenities. Denny Sanford Premiere Center will handle the bigger events.

The Pentagon is fine as the home base for the Skyforce and for hosting high school games. I guess I don't see the point of building a tiny facility and then paying college and NBA teams hundreds of thousands of dollars to play there in front of limited audiences.
