  • Philip Nelson leaving Gophers

Rumor started several months back that he would be leaving after this season. Highly touted out of high school and showed flashes as a freshman but just not a consistent 2nd year and now he finds himself down the depth chart. Everyone seems to indicate he will end up at Minnesota State his hometown school. I suppose this is likely. I have to wonder if the Bison, Sioux or maybe even the Jackrabbits are inquiring. I will be watching with some interest.

Read a tweet from someone who had talked to his father who said he wants to stay at FBS level. He never red-shirted , so he can sit out a year and still have two years to play.

I have been following the electronic chatter as well. I wonder what is best for the athlete? Do you want to get the word out and have everyone talking about where you are going, what you are interested in, what you had for supper? Is it better to play it low key and announce when a decision is made?

My hunch is that the more people that are talking about you, reading about you, tweeting about you......the better.

I know that after watching Nelson either bounce passes to his receivers or air-mail them over their heads about 50% of the time,I would much rather have Austin Sumner playing QB.

The columnist who wrote about Nelson linked in the first post of this thread did not sound like Nelson was that great of a get. I don't think he is the answer to a replacement of Austin Sumner. Where did Mr. play high school ball?

Agree. Philip seemed to regress this year. Again some flashes of greatness but mostly inaccurate throws and a tendency to tuck it and run a little to quickly. He could transfer to SDSU and redshirt with the intention to start next year. Nothing wrong with a little competition for the position.

Yes, I may be using sarcasm here, maybe not. I think he played at one of the Mankato public high schools.

Mankato West. He's a local celebrity. Lots of Gopher/Jerry Kill hate the past few days.
