Jay said on college gameday this morning that he thinks they need to get rid of the conference tournaments and just put the best 68 in the NCAA tourney. That would ruin the NCAA Tourney. Thats why i watch the first 2 days. Hoping to see an upset. I think Jay has always been anti mid major.

Re: Jay Bilas
The problem with picking the best 68 is exactly the same as the problem picking the best 37 at-large teams.
Who, exactly, defines "best" and how, exactly do you define it?
The NCAA currently defines "best" as "either winning a conference championship (however awarded) or passing the examination of the selection committee."
I say just go to 96, and give all conference champions, (plus the one best overall at-large team which is not a conference champion--to round out the 32 teams for a bye) a first-round bye. This adds one day total to the first weekend of the tournament, and continues to make conference championships (even for "power" conferences) worth something."I think we'll be OK"

Take IUPUI for example, without the opportunity to play in the Summit league Tournament for a shot at the NCAA's, their season was essentially over more than a month ago. The coaches would have been justified with sitting seniors down & starting to develop younger players for the future. If that had happened, there is no way they win 6 of 7 down the stretch leading to a bunch of good basketball games including an overtime game against ORU. It would turn the last month of basketballs regular season, into the last 2 games of the NFL season - essentially a bunch of exhibition games.
Without the Cinderellas in the NCAA tournament, I would be willing to bet its popularity would drop nearly in half. Casual fans watch in droves to see if their upset picks will come true. That will dissappear if the all 192 teams in the Big-East are still 'eligible' for the at -large pool due to mathmatically high RPI's, without having to earn their way in.

Re: Jay Bilas
Since we're throwing around options that will probably never happen, take a look at this post from the College Hoops Journal. Basically, it compares the Champions League from European soccer to college basketball and how there are a lot of similarities. It helps to be familiar with the soccer setup overseas but it's not hard to follow.

Basically you would have rounds of group play for the "Champions League" and the Summit would have an auto-bid into that. The "NCAA Cup" would involve every team and have multiple rounds, the bracket-style tournament that would replace the 68-team tourney but end with a similar Final Four to what is in place now.
Again, NEVER going to happen but worth your time to check it out.

Re: Jay Bilas
It'll never happen. However I wouldn't mind to see some type of rule that says if you don't have X amount of teams with RPI's above X you lose your post season bid. It seems like some conferences don't play any out of conference competition. Just an idea.

I believe a day is coming when the "power conferences" have their own tournament. It might be something like the BCS where a few slots are open for at-large teams. The mid-majors will be left to decide if they want to convert to a regional format and final tournament or stick with the NIT.
The reason? They don't want to keep sharing the massive profits from the NCAA tourney with a bunch of less prominent conferences that don't bring in the dollars. Fewer eaters means way more pie for those still at the table.
I know others on this board don't think it will happen but I'm confident it will. Its just a matter of time.We are here to add what we can to life, not get what we can from life. -Sir William Osler

Re: Jay Bilas
Part of Bilas argument is that auto-bids actually hurt the good mid-majors. You would get rid of auto-bids for average teams that go on a run and win their conference tourney and would instead reward teams that have a better resume. Could be the difference between ORU getting an at-large bid over the winner of a crappy conference.
The America East, Big South, MEAC and SWAC, for example, don't have a single team in the top 120 for RPI.
I prefer the current system and think losing the excitement from not having auto-bid on the line with the conference tourneys would suck.

What Bilas is saying is this:
"Selection to the tournament should be at the exclusive discretion of a small group of people acting in secret who are accountable to no one other than the NCAA."
Put that way, how good does the idea sound?
You should *always* be able to play your way into the tournament. There should always be a way for teams to circumvent the biases and flaws that are part of ANY at-large selection process.
