  • Tressel Resigns at The Ohio State

So I wonder if this will send a message that even the upper echelon of coaches can't get away with anything in college athletics?

    Probably not.

Great opportunity for Urban Meyer to return to coaching in 2012 though.

I doubt it will create any concern in the cheating cess pool of the SEC or any other BCS conference for that matter. They will continue to pay players, provide gifts, and pass kids through classes where they've done no work.

I'm kind of jaded by big-time college football after last year and this off-season.

I'm not going to lie, I'm kind of excited to see the story from SI that is coming out today.

That is not what happened in that case, in fact no money was involved it was the player's OWN gold pants which they traded for rent, etc, and tats.

I am upset and very angry about this because the punishment did not fit the crime, so the boys were to be evicted and whatnot ? Ridiculous!

I understand that the infractions and behavior I listed in my post is not what caused Tressel to resign. I was stating that the behavior I listed is rampant in big time college football.

Also, what happened in this case is that Tressel knew they sold stuff and covered it up. That's the big issue here. Those players should be suspended if they broke rules and Tressel should feel the hammer for lying. A coach is the face of the program and in his case, a big face for the university. Ohio State showed that no matter how big the coach is, he's never bigger than the university. I commend them for the belated forced resignation.

I still don't know how they got away with playing the students last year after they were busted. But they will come back next year and be suspended the first 5 games. What a crock. It doesn't matter if they come back next year or not, they should not have been allowed to play last year.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--

There is supposedly an investigative report coming out in Sports Illustrated that hastened Tressel's departure.

As for my previous posts, I obviously gave tOSU, the players, and the athletic department a free pass. They are all lying through their teeth. Tattoos, money, drugs, cars - all for memorabilia. Just crazy.

Ill try to keep an open mind since this is one side of the story, but Jim Tressel seems to be a huge scum bag.

The account that seemed to catch Tressell's nature best is where he assigned the kid a 500 word essay and then a traffic violation disappeared.

That picture of Tressell viewing himself as a sort of paterfamilias, as the unquestioned head of his family, rejecting the notion that anyone outside of that family could discipline within that family. It's almost like The Godfather. With a vest.

That I believe. I don't believe some of the wilder and vaguer accusations (the ones forwarded by the anonymous informant). I don't think they're entirely false, but I don't think they're entirely true either.

Whatever. All schools do it, tOSU just got caught.

Re: Tressel Resigns at The Ohio State

Tressel cheated at YSU and looks to have cheated since he took over at OSU. He should be treated the exact same as Pearl was at Tennessee.

There is no possible way that anyone can defend him, or the program, in any way. The man who built a reputation on "integrity and honesty" is now no better than anyone else in the college football ranks.

I'm sure that the resignation is an attempt by the program to stem the tide of the investigations. My assumption is the corruptness of the OSU program is much greater than even this report shows.

Looks like that 2002 NC is now even more tainted.

Personally, I hope that he is out of coaching for good. He has already screwed over 2 programs.

Everyone loves a winner even if it involves cheating. I think this is the trap that so many good coaches are falling into. If there were no pressure to win, we would probably have a different landscape. What is driving all this evil is the bowl contracts and the $$$$$$.

Any sanctions or penalties should also stick with the offending coaches. Any new school that wants to hire the cheating coaches may think once or twice if they are going to be penalized.
