Stanford raises funds to save Baseball at Cal

We on the news last night they ran a story about two Stanford alumns raising money to save the Cal Baseball team. Here is a link to the story

A couple of Stanford alums are teaming up to save their cross bay rivals. Former Congressman Pete McCloskey and attorney Joe Cotchett are both Stanford grads but they're trying to prevent some sports programs at cash-strapped UC Berkeley from being cut.

The Cal baseball team and the Cal rugby team are due to be cut the university says the sports programs fell victim to the poor economy and the state's budget problems. ...

I know people love/hate the rivalry with USD, but I am in the camp of love the rivalry. I always thought the USD games had more energy and it was good to see high school classmates come up for the game or at least exchange stories during Christmas or Summer break when you ran into each other in your home town.

I know this is only baseball and rugby, but I thought it was a class act by Stanford to help Cal out.

They have been discussing this issue on the Petros and Money show (great show on Fox Sports Radio) for some time now. Feelings seem mixed but generally supportive.

I'd like to imagine the rivalry between SDSU and USD could be so healthy but I'm not confident of that.

Having been to a Big Game or two, would not describe Stanford-Cal as "healthy." More like "mutural hatred," particularly since the Band screwed it up. I think the point in this case is "mutual." Kind of like the Vikings paying to keep the Packers in business, and vice versa.
