  • cowbells in the SEC

The SEC is allowing cowbells this year at football games. The game at Mississippi State tonight sure gets loud when they all ring their cowbells. I sure wish we could do that.

First thing I thought of while watching the game last night. Not many better sounds than the ringing of cowbells after a 3 & out as the D is running off the field...

I really think that if enough of us want this back than let's get it done. E-mail Justin Sell...my guess if he thinks that enough fans think it a priority and it would bring more fans to games and better the fan experience, then he should bring it to the Patty V. and the MVFC.

I know SDSU is still somewhat new to the MVFC, but I think it's time to stop acting like the new kid on the block and not be afraid to go after things that are important to us.

Obviously if Miss. St. can get the SEC to budge on the cowbell/noisemaker issue, SDSU should be able to come to an agreement with the MVFC. Maybe I'm wrong, but shouldn't it be worth a try? I've always been told it's a conference rule, not an NCAA rule. Somebody please correct me if I've been told wrong information.

It's an NCAA rule at NCAA managed events. The NCAA doesn't manage conference rules, but (I think) conferences are 'strongly encouraged' to abide by NCAA rules.

So why then are there cowbells being used loud and clear at a nationally broadcast game in the SEC?
I have a hard time believing that it's an NCAA rule when they've been used at SDSU games up until the time we started competing in the Summit and MVFC. That included some years as a D-1 institution.

Not trying to be argumentive, but I seem to get different interpretations on this from different people that are definitely..."in the know".
And just going off of experience from the industry that I work in that is full of "rules and regs"...when there's 10 people in a room and 3 or 4 different interpretations among them..it usually means nobody knows the actual answer and are guessing, or there are multiple answers.

Simple. Conference games aren't managed by the NCAA (want proof? You'll see people drinking out of paper cups that aren't covered in Vitamin Water logos). Therefore conferences can allow or ban artificial noisemakers. But the NCAA, I believe, strongly encourages conferences to adhere to its rules.

                Thanks for the "proof".

I don't have any *proof* that the NCAA is in the business of strong-arming conferences to adopt their rules, but would it surprise you if this were the case?

Above are some links regarding the cowbell, MSU and the SEC

It is definitely worth looking into it in my opinion.

Ring responsibly (only at the times specified).Maybe that's the key to getting the cowbell back.I think it'd add a lot of fun to the game.

                        Re: cowbells in the SEC

The Summit League has a ban on "artificial noisemakers". The NCAA's rules apply only to NCAA events (playoffs, etc.) I'm not as clear on how the MVFC situation is for football, but it shouldn't be a problem to allow AN (i.e., cowbells, etc.) in football...as opposed to basketball (although some might argue against it for dome teams). The tinkling keys at UNI are a joke. I'll have to inquire about the MVFC rule and its track record.
