  • Montana and Mont St to WAC?

Today's Helena (MT) Independent Record newspaper has an article discussing the possibility that Montana and Montana State may get an invite to the WAC. LINK A loss of the Montana schools would kick the stuffing out of the Big Sky Conference. But, it's all speculation at this point. The U of Montana has a good thing going right where it's at with football...it's hard for me to imagine Montana moving "up" to the WAC, a conference which is in dire straits right now.

    Interesting talk.

Montana was a member of the original Pacific Coast Conference before dropping out in the late 40"s or early 50"s, they also spent time in the Skyline which was a precursor of the WAC before dropping out in the early 60"s to help start the Big Sky. As far as I know they were uncompetitive in both leagues, and I think they have it pretty sweet in FCS. Note that the accompanying poll shows only about a third of the respondents want them to leave the Big Sky. I would agree if I was a Griz fan.

Even if the WAC has its issues, it is still a FBS conference and therefore it would by its very nature be a move "up" if Montana and or Montana State are presented with the opportunity to join.

Again, MT and MT St. are reasonable successful "fish" in the FCS pond. They would be small, little fish in the FBS pool. The WAC pool is on the verge of evaporating. Are MT or MT St. going to have as many home games, or as much success at low level FBS as we have seen at FCS? I'd be surprised if they would.

UTSA is the school that appears to be fast tracking to FBS, and Tx St. may be hard on their heels. Look for those two to jump to WAC before MT bites into the WAC apple.
