    Re: Classy Vermillion

I think Yotemeal has a valid point. I know many USD graduates who have very fond feelings about Vermillion. I think those kinds of feelings are very typical, no matter where you go to college. I have very fond feelings about Iowa City. And about Brookings.

That said, I know a lot of USD faculty who hate Vermillion. Many of them live in Yankton or North Sioux City. It may simply have something to do with your stage in life. I loved living in Iowa City when I was 33 in graduate school. Now, I just like to visit.

Brookings may be a little different than Vermillion in that many SDSU graduates and people who grew up in Brookings are very interested in finding a way to move back with their families. That's what I did. Vermillion, on the other hand, is a very fun college town but might not be many people's idea of a great town to raise a family in.

I will also say that I have probably visited 75 percent of the towns in South Dakota. Brookings AND Vermillion would be in the top four South Dakota towns for me. And I have visited many, many college towns throughout the country. Frankly, most are dumps. Brookings and Vermillion compare very well.
    Holy nutmeg!

To get busted for it while running for mayor and to not bow out of the race is one for the ages. It will be fun to see how Vermillion votes on this one. The other candidate would have to be a real stooge to not get the W! What would that say to the kids of Vermillion if they elect Mayor Stoner?

Is it just me or does this kind of stuff only happen in Vermillion? You can't make it up!

        Re: Classy Vermillion

I think all the state college towns are different.

If I was to classify Vermillion it would be the prototypical college town, as soon as the second week of May comes around it looks like a ghost town. I also think that a lot of their drug problems comes from being close to Sioux City.

Brooking I have been told was more that way in the 80's and early 90's but Daktronics as well as a larger student body, more year round ag programs and so on has changed that a little bit. Also I think Brookings has benefited from Sioux Falls growth in a positive way.

Northern/Aberdeen and SDSM&T/Rapid, I don't know if many people in those towns even know that their is a state school.

Spearfish is a retirement community for the most part and Madison I don't even know how to describe that town.
