    Re: Classy Vermillion

I hope we don't start judging places by some of the candidates for public office!

Brookings certainly has had its fair share of knuckleheads, weirdos and thugs. Just a few weeks ago, the community was getting unwelcome attention because some pervert was sexually assaulting women. (Hopefully the suspect won't run for mayor.) Brookings is a great little college town. It's a nicer town than Vermillion. But it might have even more people who should be banished to Fargo.
      This space for lease.

Maybe a few years back SDSU had a Student Body President that was governing from the Brookings County Jail. The name escapes me, but this had to be the low point of student interest in the student governing boards. How this individual was elected in the first place was no doubt due to lack of interest in who was running for the office. Seems like this individual had a serious problem with alchohol and was in complete denial. Some of you guys who left campus in the 1990's possibly remember this individual. As I recall he was a complete embarrassment to administration and alums alike.

As far as the suspect running for mayor, not much chance as it appears the SD taxpayers will be feeding and caring for him for years. Thanks Nebraska for sending your best to Brookings.

In all candor, I also think Brookings is an ok community. Obviously, it doesn't hold that "special feeling" one has when they go to school and look back with a great deal of affinity.

But I do think you're wrong about USD grads not liking Vermillion. In fact, it is quite the opposite, and probably for the same reasons you endear Brookings. There is a uniqueness to Vermillion that does draw alumni back, often to live and/or retire there.

Does it have a strong retail center? Not really. But it has an ever growing amount of restaurants that appeal to a large base. If you haven't driven through Vermillion lately, do so. (of course not to an athletic event) I think you would find a very large change in the town and the campus itself.

There is nothing wrong with Vermillion. Do I wish the guy running for mayor would shut up, yes I do. But I am also learning slowly that is why our forefathers fought in wars so idiots like that can speak their mind.

I tell you what. I have an idea I want to work on and refine, but let me throw it out there. I will buy as many tickets as needed on a football Saturday (when the Jacks are on the road) and invite my friends from this website to the game, as my guest. We will tailgate prior to the game, and if the Jacks are playing, I will make certain proper equipment is running so you can listen to the game. I will show you around the campus, and even go as far as having supper somewhere in town following the game. Consider it an olive branch, an experimental "cultural exchange".

I'll rent a skybox for food and beverage, and I will show you what I would hope is the best of Vermillion and the best of USD. I would then think if the day is successful, you would do the same for my counterparts and show us the best of Brookings and SDSU. How is that for an offer?

It is sincere. Now, fire away

I've had this standing offer from several others since returning to SD 4 years ago. I haven't been to a game yet but I am considering it. Between family and work, Jackrabbit FB, hunting and fishing, golf, etc...I don't have much interest in a visit to Vermillion or the DD.

That doesn't mean others shouldn't consider your offer.

As for Brookings being the best place in the world, it has my vote. That said, I've only lived in Lake Norden, Brookings, Vermillion, Rochester MN, and Yankton. The worst place I've spent any extended period of my life is Vermillion, by far.

A very generous offer. I been through Vermillion many times especially when I lived in Nebraska and came up for SDSU athletic events, but then I grew up in Brookings and Brookings County. Both communities are small and have a great deal to offer.

I think JackJD was refering to the professionals, law and medicine who get a taste of both campus, and seem to come away with a bias towards SDSU. When VJ Smith was alumni director, he was once amongst all the alumni directors at Governor Mansion a few years ago. I quote from his recent book Jackrabbit Tales. I quote VJ as follows:
" Governor Bill Janklow, a USD alumus, had asked the alumni directors from the public universities to attend a lunchean.

At the outset of the meeting, we took turns introducing ourselves. After I said who I was and where I came from, Governor Janklow interuppted me and said" Whats is it about your place? I've met so many people who flunked out after a semster or two, but will stand up and sing the college song as if they were the valedictorian of their classes!"
VJ replied and I quote: "I believe its loyality sir. We have a lot to be proud of."

This is what JackJD was speaking of.

Great memories play a large role in how I view Brookings. However, Lawrence is one of the top college towns in America (per some list on msn.com), so I can say I have had it pretty good for the last 10 years or so (there were some other places I lived in that period of time - it did not take me 10 years for undergrad and law school). However, there is only one Cubby's, one Pizza King, and one Skinners outdoor porch and those are in Brookings.

I tell you what. Since you have had so many offers the last 4 years, and just haven't had time to go, I'll withdraw my offer to you, but keep it open to the fanbase of SDSU on this website.

I have read with great interest the past 2 years how the majority don't want to play each other because of the bad behavior of the students. There is part of that that will never be corrected (at EITHER school), but if we truly want to build a bridge to play each other with sportsmanship as the main criteria, I am totally sincere in my offer.

KULAW talks Brookings in a positive way because of his MEMORIES. That is exactly right. There is only one CAREYS, and that is in Vermillion. Those are the memories we all hold onto and cherish.

Now aside from Doc, and I will tell you I don't hunt, so just about any game is ok with me if we are going to do this. The olive branch is extended to all (except Doc). Despite what has been said here previously, you won't die or get an infectous disease if you accept the offer, my money says we would have alot of fun. I know I would love to see SDSU in a positive light.

And lastly, so everyone gets a taste or feel for how students will react, I invite you to wear YOUR school colors when at USD, and let's monitor student reaction. If successful, then the USD contingent comes to SDSU will wear Coyote Red, and we'll see how everyone behaves then.

I think this will be fun.

I sat with Coach Meirkort, his wife, and several USD booster a couple of months ago. We talked about a lot of different things including Brookings and Vermillion. I reported that Careys would be what I most remember about the town. Between classes and study time I spent most of my time in the Lee Medicine building. I also have fond memories of the Newman Center. So, Careys, Newman Center, Lee Medicine building, the Bluffs golf course those will be the things I remember most.

Can't forget about Bunyan's either, great fried burgers and cold beer.

YF, don't shut me out completely on that offer. If I decide to attend a game I'll go with the Yankton guys and stop by your spot. They tell me they have a "box" where they watch the game from, beer and snacks included. I wasn't aware that was an option but it sounds like it is. They also make a stop at Careys before returning home, I'm all for that. I am much more inclined to attend now that there will be some DI teams in town.

That's interesting...how can a SD BOR school allow alcohol inside of a state owned building for a NCAA college athletic event?

The area you may be talking about is Coyote Landing
The area is closed off and access is only allowed to donors at a certain gift level. It is considered a hospitality area and the drinks are free. The area is in the old visitor section on the south sidelines. The skyboxes are considered the same, a hospitality area for donors. All schools do the same. Maybe not at athletic events but other events on campus.

There you go, I knew it had a name. The Yankton group is with Avera (major sponsor) the invite is open. I should probably check it out.

As for donor events, I've been to many gatherings at SDSU where complimentary alcoholic beverages are served.
