From our friends to the south:

Vermillion Mayor Candidate Faces Drug Charges

VERMILLION, S.D. - A candidate for mayor in Vermillion says he'll continue to run despite a recent drug arrest.

And Nick Severson says he'll push for the legalization of marijuana if he's elected mayor.

The 27-year-old University of South Dakota senior says marijuana is freely traded, especially in a college town, and he wants to see that trade regulated. He says taxing marijuana could help pay for city services.

The real news is that a politician didn't lie about smoking pot in college.

Why not legalize it. The tax that could be imposed on it could be a money maker. Farmers could utilize land that can't grow anything else but ditch weed, power companies would make money from the people with inside growing operations for all the grow lamps required. Licensing fees for the people who want to grow it. A license would be required to prevent just anyone from growing it for private comsumption.

The State would benefit by not having to jail illegal users anymore freeing up jail space for the people who really need it. Unemployment would drop cause all those deadhead stoners would finally be motivated to go out and get a job in the mj industry. Truckers would benefit from it by hauling the bales to market, migrant workers would benefit by having to harvest it. Stoners again would benefit by being quality control inspectors having to test the product. The benefits are endless. South Dakota-The New Amsterdam. Tourism would benefit. Just think a smoke house overlooking Mt. Rushmore.*

*the above comment are to be taken for what its worth- tongue in cheek and do not reflect the opinion of the writer.

I am not a pot smoker, but I can see the positives in legalizing the marijuana trade. Can a person really argue that pot is worse than say, cigarettes or alcohol? Make it legal, tax the heck out of it, and take the money made and put it back into our schools.

Legalizing pot will never happen. Why?

It would make sense and save money (or in this case make money) and we can't have that.

Wow! Hey, if a person wants to smoke a little wacky tobacky on his own time that is their business. Doesn't bother me.

To get busted for it while running for mayor and to not bow out of the race is one for the ages. It will be fun to see how Vermillion votes on this one. The other candidate would have to be a real stooge to not get the W! What would that say to the kids of Vermillion if they elect Mayor Stoner?

Is it just me or does this kind of stuff only happen in Vermillion? You can't make it up!

                      Exactly the problem.

Alcohol & cigs impose hefty costs on society as a whole. I'm not arguing that either of those should be banned, rather, that it's specious reasoning to suggest that pot is no worse than alcohol & tobacco, without noting that alcohol and tobacco related absenteeism, crime, and health costs are in the billions of dollars per year. Why legalize yet another source of absenteeism, crime (DUIs), and health costs?

Why are those things legal and pot isn't, then?

While were at it let's legalize prostitution as well. People are doing it already, we might as well legalize it, tax it and make a profit.

In the meantime, we need to ban same-sex marriage, close the borders, and restrict access to safe medical procedures.

All the above said in jest........maybe. Let's not take this discussion in this direction. The young man is an idiot, leave it at that.

GREAT reason to NOT live in DC proper, especially Anacostia.
