Whip to White Anniversary

There's a story in the Brookings Register about the 40th anniversary of the Whip to White. To celebrate the town of White is inviting all students who participated in the Whip to come back this summer and ride in the Pioneer Days parade. It made me go back and re-read the Whip to White chapter in Amy Dunkle and V.J. Smith's College on the Hill. Should be a fun time.

I was a little kid at the time of the Whip to White event. I recall a perception that there were a few frightened people anticipating that event. One older lady in my town was quoted as laughingly saying, "I hope they don't viggle over to Volga!"

Wasn't the Whip to White a response to the Zip to Zap (ND)?

That's what I've heard, but the story in The College on the Hill says they were planning the Whip to White long before North Dakota's Zip to Zap.
